“Now he was here, he didn’t know what to say. He stuck his clammy hands between his knees and looked out into the dark.
“You didn’t want to stay behind with Hope and Leo?” she asked.
Jarrett choked on a laugh.
“Ah, no. The way she hung off his every word, as though he were a god or something.” Jarrett glanced at Madeline. “Sorry. I know she’s your friend, but—”
“But she has the worst taste in men I’ve ever come across.” Madeline finished his sentence, then glanced back at him. “Sorry. I know he’s your friend, but—”
“He’s a dickhead?” A flicker of a smile crossed Madeline’s face as Jarrett continued. “Yeah. I don’t know why I didn’t notice it earlier.”
