The first book and movie are very similar, though I prefer the book. Later on, the movie series goes off the rail and does its own random thing. Off the top of my head one of the few differences I can think of between book and film concerning the first one is the scene where Matthew buys Anne's dress. In the book he is so cripplingly shy that he can't manage to ask the woman at the shop for a dress at all; instead he has to ask a neighbor to make it for her, puff sleeves and all -- and it's brown not blue.

I agree, Sof, and the movies always cut out my favorite chapter where she and Gilbert are competing to be the best in the class and I love that the book takes it so seriously like when one week they were tied and Anne is so angry and emmbarassed because the teacher writes their names together on the board. In every adaption, this chapter takes up all of a fourth of a scene or less. Movies also, just can't capture the humor of the books as well, such as the hilarious first chapter about how Rachel Lynde is always up on other people's business. That chapter is so funny but it just can't really be captured in a movie because it's a different medium. If you must watch one of the adaptations, though, watch the 1985 version, and for god's sake do not watch the Netflix series!

The first movie has Anne at age 13 instead of being 11 like she was in the book. The reason for this was so the actress Megan Follows could play her from the age of 13 to 16. You know, having her dress like a girl with her hair in braids at 13. Then longer skirts and hair pinned up at 16. This also made Gilbert 15-16 instead of 13 as he was in the book.

In the movies it is very much focused on Gilbert and Anne where as in the books , she has many adventures and is not at all focused on their relationship for most of the book. That is the main one
