I was sort of tricked into learning to read. My dad would read chapter books at bedtime, and sometimes there were cliffhangers. Or he would buy a new one before we were finished with the old one (and the new one always looked more interesting). So I started reading to the next chapter (or the first chapter of the new book), then finishing the book, then reading whole books on my own. I also enjoyed the drawings in comic books (think Peanuts, Calvin & Hobbes etc.) and wanted to know the jokes that went with the characters expressions. At first I made up what they were saying, but then I actually... wanted to know. I wanted to know their names, and what the real joke was. And so, I learned to read.I also had a bit of formal education, but much less than it would seem. It's amazing how much you can learn to read just by asking "which line are we on now?" and seeing your dad point to the words he's reading, then following with your eye. Next thing you know, the words he's saying have become the text you're reading, and then you're reading ahead of him and getting it right most of the time.
I hated reading as a child. My mom always insisted I read something because it will help in my education. My ass. I ended up reading by chance a YA book and this is all that I read.. At least I like reading now.
I loved being read to, but I had trouble learning to read for myself. It took a while for me to become comfortable enough with independent reading, that I could actually enjoy it. I still like audiobooks too, that way I don't have to leave the story when it's time to be productive.
My grandma used to read me stories, and later my sister read me so short books. She soon got bored of it, though, hahaha. It kind of came to me naturally to learn, and then I was hooked on it.
I read all the time as a child, sometimes my parents had to take the book out of my hands because I was so focused on what I was reading I didn't listen to them, I even remember trying to read in the car until I got so dizzy I just had to stop
Got completely lost in books as a kid! When life sucked, I poked my head in a book! When my kids were young we read together in bed each night. Now, one of them is an author - yay!
I started reading when I was three and I loved it instantly so I can't remember myself without a book nor can I remember somebody reading to me.
I actually HATED reading until I was about 12. I have dyslexia and ADD and it was just to hard for my to actually sit down and read and I came to passionately hate it. And then I actually got a copy of The Lightening Thief from my Grandma for my 12th birthday and I was immediately going to throw it out without telling her. Of course that didn't happen because my Mom forced me to at least read the first two chapters. And then I got hooked and I read the whole series in six days and for the past four years since then I have absolutely LOVED reading and really would like to be a novelist after I graduate from high school.
