Can I just vote for Martin Freeman? :)
Why is there no "I kinda like them but if they were absent from my life I wouldn't notice for a while" option? Or a "they'd be much cooler if Samwise Gamgee had never existed and they learned to shave their feet" option?

CC, I added a MEH option just for you. < This might benefit you also, Rebecca.
Jennifer, I knew you'd vote against my wishes. :(
Ellie, since you have a banana as your profile pic I will smile at you this time. :)

haha, Martin Freeman love forever!
I actually only found out yesterday when I was waiting for the S-Bahn (subway in Berlin, kinda). There was this huge poster on the other side of the tracks. And it was the Hobbit staring at me and I thought: "Maaan, this looks a lot like Martin Freeman." and so I checked and yes. lol

It put me to sleep.
And anything that bores me to snores, I stay away from !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm such a bad geek.
ETA: Just read the other comments and see I'm not alone! W00t!

(Yup, I was around for all that particular hoopla and the über fan clubs). The young whipper-snappers among you may not get that phrase.
I loved the book (once I knew how the journey turned out and read LOTR I did not reread a lot, the quest/mystery was resolved. LOTR got quite a few rereads from me). I even liked Rankin-Bass animated film although I thought they really geared it to children and the Saturday morning cartoon crowd.
And I just saw the new film recently. I deliberately tried to stay away from discussions and reviews (well it was pervasive so caught some) but went in worried both because they were making it a trilogy and hopeful that the longer length meant they were sticking very closely to the book. I also heard ahead of time that Galadriel, Saruman, Elrond and other major LOTR players were in it while in the book most of them were completely off-stage if even mentioned and that worried me.
I did really love the new movie. There were moments that brought a chill to my spine they so evoked the book – Sting turning blue, the first encounter with Gollum, even the silly "That's what Bilbo Baggins Hates" song at the start of the quest. The cameos by LOTR characters handled well enough except it was really weird having Bilbo and the dwarves with Rivendell elves instead of Mirkwood. And they did take every opportunity for battle scenes and derring-do's that, if even mentioned, weren't dwelt on in the book. LOL, I refused to check my watch to avoid knowing exactly where the first movie was going to stop.
