Shankar Chaphadkar I am a collector of dust-jackets and as of date am having a fairly good collection of dust-jackets of English, Hindi & Marathi books.

message 52: by Shankar (last edited Oct 11, 2015 03:26AM) (new)

Shankar Chaphadkar Ellie,
I collect the Dust jackets which are detachable but are double , in
that one of the same type exactly is fixed ( pasted to the binding,
with its front & rear flaps (with brief matter about the subject
matter of the book on the front flap & about the author on he rear
flap) pasted below the fixed front & rear end papers. To compensate, I
photo-copy the original matter on the flaps & paste it in place in
the book, so that the matter is not lost to the future reader please.
Thanks for your interest in the dust-jackets, & I also take liberty to
recommend to you the following very Good, Well Researched Book on the
subject please : "Book-jackets: Their History, Form and Use -by G.
Thomas Tanselle", published by Bibliographic Society of 'Varsity of
Virginia, Alderman Library, USA. Thanks & regards - Shankar.

Jonathan Harbour I remove the dust jacket and put it behind other books on the bookshelf so it will never get lost.

Any chance I could get a photo of this, please? Thanks!

message 55: by Brian (new)

Brian I lent my book to my mom and she gave it back to me without jacket. She told me if I find one to just charge her for it, she's 83 and I know what happened. I could never charge her for it but , does anyone know where I can find another jacket for it. "Why can't I get better" by Richard Horowitz. Thank you for any advice I can get. Brian

Same here! they protect the book and make GREAT book marks!

Well said!! The content is exactly the same, and they suit some people so what's the problem? I own electronic copies of all my e-books and can re-read them any time.

message 59: by Tonia (new)

Tonia Polak Hardcovers can be worth a lot of money down the road, especially if the books become classics. Losing the dust jacket devalues the book. Don't do it!

message 60: by Devin (last edited May 20, 2016 07:14AM) (new)

Devin Peters My public library TAPES THEM ON, after adding cellophane, so it crinkles and crackles and ANNOYS ME TO NO END!

message 61: by Devin (new)

Devin Peters Stacy wrote: "Throwing away a dust jacket is like throwing away a child. You just don't do it."

But throwing away a badly damaged book jacket is like throwing away a dead baby: still frowned upon, but better than keeping it.

message 62: by Melissa (last edited Jun 02, 2016 12:03AM) (new)

Melissa H.S. I leave it on, it feels like part of the book, the artwork on the dust jacket often isn't anywhere else on the book.

message 63: by GHe (new)

GHe Lorenzo When i read i remove the dust jacket and after i read the whole book i put it back on again :)

message 64: by Rianne (new)

Rianne I would never throw the dust jacket away, it's part of the book! I usually let the dust jacket on while I read, I sometimes remove it when transporting my book.

message 65: by Anisha (new)

Anisha Sometimes I use the dust jacket as a bookmark but more often I take them off. I have several hidden around the house, some for books I've probably passed on.

message 66: by Roman (new)

Roman Stadtler I was surprised "Throw it away" was even a choice! Unless it's badly damaged, why would you throw it away? It's part of the book. That's kind of like buying a sandwich and throwing away the bread.

message 67: by Mekiah (new)

Mekiah Johnson I think it goes both ways. But for the most part, I need to have the dust jacket on the book while i am reading. If it isn't on the book and it's lying somewhere else, I find that distracting.

message 68: by Roberta (last edited Nov 16, 2016 05:36AM) (new)

Roberta If the book is a "keeper," I cover the dj in mylar so it stays new looking forever. If the book is not a keeper I may take the dust jacket off while I am reading the book and put it back on later. I've sold a few books and mostly they sell easier with the dj. I use a piece of scrap paper for a bookmark so that I can make notes on it for my reviews.

message 69: by Keith (new)

Keith I am currently listening/following along to Cell by Stephen King. The dust jacket keeps sliding, moving around. I am going to take it off until I finish the book because there is no point in trying to fix it every time I set it up or turn the page.

message 70: by Emma Ruth (new)

Emma Ruth I can't believe people throw away the dust jacket. If the dust jacket is tatty and falling apart it means it's doing its job and keeping the actual book safe.

message 73: by Aditya (new)

Aditya I tried reading with the jacket on when I read a hardcover for the first time, but it was getting in the way and also getting a little damaged, so I removed it, read the book, and put it back on.
Also, I wonder how someone can think of throwing away the dust jacket. Throwing away something this beautiful and perfect? Sorry, buy I cannot think of it, much less doing it.

message 74: by Lucy (new)

Lucy I rarely buy hard cover books as I find them more uncomfortable to hold, more espensive, take up more space on my already over full book rack and heavier to carry around. Most often, I will wait until the paperback versioncomes out. That said, when it's the only format available and I really really really want that book now, I take the dust cover off while reading as it shifts and slides, then put it back on when im done with the book.

message 75: by Aditya (new)

Aditya "I rarely buy hard cover books as I find them more uncomfortable to hold, more espensive, take up more space on my already over full book rack and heavier to carry around. "
Same here. In fact, the only hardcover books I have are either gifts or I bought them at a second hand shop. They are really difficult to hold and take with me, which is a problem because I do most reading at school, between classes.
Another reason I don't buy hardcover books because they are more expensive, and I am not that rich :-)
-Aditya Singh

Thomas Bell Mains i've found that keeping it on while reading can damage the cover so I have started reading without and putting it back on when I am done. I have only ever thrown one dust cover away and it was ruined. Now, I still hold onto ruined dust covers. (I only have two ruined one's.) Some books I can understand getting rifle of the dust cover but most of them I just don't see why anyone would want to get rid of them. Many of the fantasy books I have, have such beautifully artwork, especially the Brandon Sanderson and Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman books.

message 77: by Ivy (new)

Ivy H I take it off and use it as a bookmark while reading. Yeah. Lol. I'm a lazy bitch that way.

message 78: by Kagiso (new)

Kagiso Kwadi Throw it away? Why and who would do such a horrible thing? :(

message 79: by Jon (new)

Jon I personally never have a problem with reading with the dust jackets on. Unless it is a rather large book. I leave them on because frankly printers have made the actual books really plain ( probably to keep us actually wanting to use them ) most of the collectors editions I purchased have well designed covers that don't need a jacket. I would prefer the information that is on the side flaps to be on the leaves leaving space for signature underneath, design the cover and leave off the dust jacket. Until that happens I am pretty much going to keep mine on unless they get really bad which hasn't happened yet..at least to me.

message 80: by Hammy (new)

Hammy Jeffery I like to keep dust jackets for the artwork, but I just take them off when I read so they don't get in the way. Either that, or, for some books, I get some clear book covering and seal it up library-style.

message 86: by Angelo (new)

Angelo Mahinay The dust jacket is part of the book and it would be incomplete without it. I take it off when reading, put it in a safe place and put it back on when done.
For modern book collectors, the condition of the dust jacket in some cases is 70-80% of the value of the book.
You’ll never know, the book you have will be a collectible modern first edition with very good dust jacket and will be worth more that what you bought it for.

Amy (won't be online for a while. sorry to all the groups i'm in!) I had no idea! That's crazy and good to know if I ever want to sell my books. Not likely but thanks for the fact!

When I am browsing the stacks of a library or bookstore , it is usually the art on the book cover that brings my attention to the book . Then I read the review on the inside . So you have provided some useful info for this bookworm . Thanks . I'll make sure to remember it .

Amy (won't be online for a while. sorry to all the groups i'm in!) That's what I do as well I always look at the art first then the contents of the book.

P.S ONE OF IS IS LUING IS AMAZING YOU ALL SJOULD READ IT!!!

message 90: by Corban (new)

Corban Ford I usually tape the dust jacket to the book rather than slip it on or off and have to deal with all that, although I regret to say that if I obtain a book with a dust jacket that is just severely damaged...then I do let it go lest it continue to fall apart in my possession.

I toss them, not out of disrespect to the designer because some of them are really awesome looking but I just can't stand them sliding around and then I have to worry about it getting torn up or something anyway while I'm reading the book so I just throw them away.

Just wondering why you throw it away... Please explain.

Corban Ford I totally get this. The sliding is a problem.

message 94: by Anthony (new)

Anthony McEvoy I would love if a psychologist did a study of how people interact with books. My wife and I both love books.....but there the similarity ends.
I take off the dust jacket while I read....she doesn't and insists I am a complete oddity. I dog ear pages...she never does and always uses a book mark. She breaks the spine on paperbacks.....I have never understood this ! Both of use use Kindles....she for pulp fiction me for weighty historical tombs that would be far too difficult to hold in paper form. But she always insists on her Poetry being in proper book form.....but I never got poetry,....non-fiction that's my stuff. Yes a shrink would love us. Do we need help ? We are available for study ;-)

~☆~Autumn Mammoth wrote: "Does anyone use the inner flaps as bookmarks or is it just me? Haha"

My ex did this so I picked it up and do it also. It is very helpful as the dust jacket doesn't fall out of the pages which regular bookmarks tend to do. I also now use these little sticky things which come in many colors and stay put. They are also helpful for finding pages when you want to create a neverending quiz question. I recently found some very cool ones in a library book and kept them as they are so nice. One is the shape of a tiny blue moth.
