Poll
Should this group switch to a staggered format, reading each book for one month, with one beginning on the first of the month and the other on the 15th? Or shall we stay the same as we have been doing, choosing both books and beginning both on the 1st of the month?
NO - Keep the current system.
YES - Switch to a staggered format.
MEH - I have another, vastly superior idea which after voting this way, I will detail in the comments immediately or else face public ridicule.

a very reasonable reason for voting that way. There's merits to both thoughts, which is why I supported bringing this idea to a vote, but have personally declined to vote, since I'm fine with either course. The staggering would be good in some ways, less so in others. I look forward to seeing the result on the 10th.
I suppose it could be possible that book 1 would be read from the beginning of the month to the end of the month, and book 2 would be read from the 15th to the end of the month. Does that make any sense, am I missing something obvious? If you want to take your time (or are a slow reader like me), you might get lucky and have your preferred book read as "the long read" or, if not, you could start at the beginning of the month anyway and be all set when the discussion kicks off on the 15th.
Just my two cents. :) I'm actually quite happy with the way things are currently organised.
ah, that's interesting, I'll admit, but would take special work to ensure the short read was indeed short. This month, for example, both reads are 500 pages or so.
Staggering the starts is a good idea. There would be no "waiting" to read a book on the 15th, any more than there is "waiting" to read a book on the 1st. Which day you start to read a book on is an entirely arbitrary distinction. However, IF someone intends to read both books, and keep up with both discussions, it would be quite annoying to have to read both books simultaneously. Staggering the start at least gives readers the option to finish one book, then start reading the next.

If s.o. doesn't want to read both books he/she will not have to wait 15 days before he/she start the one they want.
