Well, one thing is that an iPad is about 6x the price and it's made by Apple, one of the ten companies I hate.

Also, have you noticed that you write a lot? :|
Anyways, about the price: A regular android tablet which is cheaper can do as much or more than an iPad.
Actually there may soon be a tablet/phone that can do everything a computer can do: http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android

Fire may not have as many "apps" for it (Android) but, there are over 66,000 and counting. They cover the bases I need. When it came time to buy it, I asked myself, what do I really need/want to do with something like that?
The answer is that the Kindle Fire does everything I want it to do. I'm a pretty simple guy with basic needs (a camera on my tablet isn't one of them)-email, Instant Messaging, multi-media (specifically movies and Tv shows and music) and picking up the news.
At a quarter of the price of an iPad 3, and 1 sixth of the price of an iPad 4. There just isn't any reason for me to get one yet.
The video on the fire is a little better than on the iPad anyway and between Amazon Prime and Hulu.com I can get most movies and TV shows free (excepting that you have to pay the membership fee for Prime).
It may be a sign of my being an old fuddy-duddy, but, when I need the fuctionality of an iPad, I'll look at more complicated tablets. As it is, I like the Kindle Fire and it does what I want it to.
I'm just not into paying $500 bucks to get something that does more than I need, when I can pay $200 and get something that does what I need.
And, for the record, given my wife's iPad, my Kindle Fire and my Kindle 3, for just simply reading an e-book, I prefer the kindle 3. I find it's easier on my eyes.
When I researched these e-reader thing-a-mah-bobs, the best guidence I found there isn't a whole lot of difference. That means it's a matter or taste and preference.
I'm glad there are iPads out there for people who want or need them, Nooks for people who would rather associated with Barnes and Noble, Kindles, both fire and 3/4G for people like me with basic, simple needs.
Too many times I've run into people who tried to sell me more than I needed for more than twice the price of what I wanted. There are a lot of choices out there and each of them either fits a person's needs/desires or it fails, regardless of the company or brand name.
I know I'm a dinosaur, but I still use a laptop for most of my writing/word processing needs and my big clumsy fingers haven't been as able to navigate the touch-keyboard of an iPad nearly as easy.
I appriciate your endorsing the things you use and like. I've done that with the Kindle Fire when it came out. It helps to have knowledgable people talk about the things they have that they like. So, when I decide I need something else, I have somewhere to go for information.
I just find that so many people, in particularly my generation and older (though by no means exclusively or all inclusively) tend to buy more than they need and spend more money than they need to. For some, that's no big deal (can't take your money with you right?) for me it is.
For anyone choosing a tablet, notebook/laptop, desk top computer, or e-reader, if they come to me, the first question I ask is...what do you want to do with it? Most of the time, that's web-surf, social network, email, music and movie/tv-shows, if it's that much. If that's their answer, a kindle fire or Android Notebook is all they need.
When computers started getting big and evolving/upgrading every 6 months, I am guilty of getting the race to have the first CRAIG super-computer on my desk. Now days, I just want what I'm going to use and if I can get it cheaper than a top of the line gadget, and the second or third teir gadgets will do what I need. I'm fine with that.

Dude... really?
It's not about settling for something less than or lacking ambition or sophistication. It's simply about being Honest with yourself about what you want to be able to do (learn new things, that's fine) and being honest what you really want to do. Just be honest. If you want to do more than the minimum, then get something that can do more, even if you have to learn how to do the things you want to do from scratch.
There are people out there that don't like audio books. To them I say..."then don't buy audobooks."
There are people out there that don't like e-Readers. I don't get it, but to them I say, "save your money. Don't get an e-Reader."
Both of my parents have written books. My mother has had a computer on her desk since the Comodore 64 was the hottest thing on the internet. My father can hardly check his own email, but he's the fasted two fingered hunt and peck artist I've ever seen on a Smith-Corona Manual Typewriter. My mother loves exploring the internet, writing, emailing etc. Dad, god love him, just doesn't feel he needs to be bothered with all that, multi-media stuff.
If somebody told me they needed to do all of the things that you need an iPad for, then, I would have told them, "Do not to waste 200 dollars on a kindle fire go big or stay home. Get an iPad."
Justin wrote,"...I thought I was being clever buying cheaper, less functional devices, and in the end I still ended up with an iPad. Now I have pawned my other devices throughout the household, to people who still borrow my iPad any moment it's not in use and still talk about how they want to sell (insert reader or tablet here) and get an iPad! But I can't justify selling the devices Ive collected and no longer use at such a loss, so Im stuck with them. I'd just hate to see anyone make the mistake I did. ..."
If your honest with yourself about what you want and need-about how you are going to use it, then your not making a mistake when you get something that fits your needs.

wait, one last grumpy guy "dig" before I go to the nice cuddly disney dwarf grump... you are aware that saing "I'm sorry YOU took it that way." also sounds patronizing? I said that to my wife once... what happened next wasn[t very pretty.
Okay, now I'm shifting gears to my softer, more bunny-like side.
naah... I just didn't pick up the nickname "Curmudgeon" because I have a sunny disposition. Think of it this way, I eat a lot of fiber...
The dude really was my grumpy warning shot that the tone seemed patronizing to me...that's not the same as me actually thinking that you WANTED to sound that way. I just couldn't be sure
The "Be honest with yourself" wasn't directed at you, it was directed at anyone that buys gadgets. I'm also the biggest offender I know at not following that.
"Sure, I'll use it a lot. Everybody needs an electronic gadget to measure the length of solar flares...it's got a warrantee, if I don't use it I'll send it back."
That's me...but, I haven't found a gadget to measure solar flares...I will (sigh) some day...
I'm far from insulted. I like debate and discussion too much, but it's easy to poke the demon in me sometimes. (Trust me, if you think that last post sounded touchy... this was the squirt gun of my "taking offense" arsenal. I have a shotgun and a 20 mm chain gun in there too. Metaphorically speaking I mean.)
And, no, I was being sarcastic.
As for talking on videos... I'm not sure. It's hard enough getting people to respond to me through type... if they had to look at me too? ...well, lets just say, that there is no internet porkchop to tie around my neck and if there was, no internet dogs to play with.
The world isn't ready for the face of the Curmudgeon.
Thank you for the debate. Now I have work...they found me again!

The LCD-screen doesn't seem to give me any noticeable eye-strain. I'm used to reading from an LCD screen attached to my PC all day long, anyway.
I actually prefer the LCD screen of the tablet to the unlit background of the Kindle, especially since the latter requires quite a bit of light when I go to bed, and I prefer low light at bedtime to induce sleepiness.
What I do love about the kindle, though is the search function (I have a touchscreen).
Both my readers can read text in a digital voice. (In other words, sound)
..so for me, it's extremely hard to vote on a poll like this, since I find each of my readers have useful features.

iPad can be used for everything and in fact I use it and iPhone to read more and more and reference plus newspapers, magazines....my PC sits on off.
A very large plus is that on the Cloud my books are backed up to all devices and I never risk loss of a book ...it will be on my PC, etc too. Excellent system.
But a huge complaint to GoodReads....it never offers iBook edition selection.....WHY? Very limiting and frustrating.

Oh, and I hate Apple too. Which makes me a massive hypocrite.

And, by the way, I love my kindle fire.

And, by the way, I love my kindle fire."
I was very confused by that too Ian! Would be nice to see them listed and how many hits per reader. Could it be because with iPad you can read all the other readers? Confused me too......but many things on Goodreads do.....

I enjoy kindle too, on my ipad2! Like the formats....

I gave the ereader to my daughter.

Absolutely....best of all possible worlds. :-)

Totally true. Kindle Fire is like iPad...I have both a tablet and a kindle reader - obviously there is no place for comparison. If you want to read - e-ink is the way. If you want to check some magazine or browse something fast then tablet would be better....yet again, you cannot read long hours at a tablet (or a device with non e-in display).

Actually, even though the iPad does much more than the Sony Reader, I think if I had to choose one device, I'd keep the Sony Reader.
I must read from a book each day just to feel and smell what I have used all the days past. I will never stop reading from books but have just expanded my reading experiences'
