To me the most important question is the topic of the book. Am I interested in it and is it worth my time. If the book is not up to snuff, it doesn't matter who published it.

Sounds like my thoughts are the same as Cheryl's and Dana's. I want a well written book...I don't like to waste my time.
I've read both. If I know the author personally, I'll read the book ~ probably. If their affiliated with a particular group, I'm more comfortable with their book. If it's a traditionally published author, the FIRST thing I look at is the publisher.
