michelle+8 Last book I read was Sherlock Holmes (The Return of...), which obviously everyone knows about from childhood, but I decided to read it because of Stephen Moffat's excellent series, Sherlock.

message 102: by Laurie (new)

Laurie I just happened by the last chance $1.00 bargain bin at a local bookstore and just could not resist it. It was a used book on its way out the door for charity. Turns out the book "The Beautiful Sinners" is quite a murder/mystery/psychological thriller. It is tricky to keep all the characters straight, but it is really good.

message 103: by Rob (new)

Rob Depressing but predictable how many people found out about things via amazon. Isn't it about time that right thinking people opted to actively hunt out other sources - especially physical bookshops. We really need to keep them going and it's up to us.

Laurie Rob wrote: "Depressing but predictable how many people found out about things via amazon. Isn't it about time that right thinking people opted to actively hunt out other sources - especially physical bookshops..."

It just isn't the same. I love independent bookstores. The atmosphere is what I enjoy the most. The sheer physicality of books and being able to hold them and read excepts at will to base a decision, not others opinions.

message 105: by Eyehavenofilter (new)

Eyehavenofilter I was attracted to the covers of Jonesbo's ( that's what I affectionately call Jo Nesbo) books , and the covers of "Child 44" and "Agent 6", plus the fact that they were all set up together with Larssons "Millinium" series.
Soooooooo I got hog tied by that Scabdinavian barbed wire I love so much!
"OUCH" and fell in deep! What can I say , I look at the cover, then the author, then read the jacket! If it's 3 out of 3 I read it!

message 106: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Andrikus Coming from a lower-income background, I hardly ever bought any books (with the notable exception of College textbooks, Atlas, Dictionaries, and Holy Bible). Hence more than 90% of the books I've rated and reviewed on GR are the ones I obtain from the public libraries in Northern Kentucky region!

My sentiments exactly! =)"

Mine as well :))

message 108: by Ashley (new)

Ashley My choice wasn't listed. I read Jodi Picoult's The Lone Wolf because she's one of my favorite authors, and I keep up with her new releases. I preordered it.

I chose Bestseller Lists because her books are always best selleres.

message 109: by [deleted user] (new)

The last book I finished was Mockingjay. I basically couldn't get away from the series, so I caved in and read them. So glad I did!

message 110: by [deleted user] (new)

Hard cover is from a friend at work to borrow, and Kindle from Facebook adds

message 111: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Not friends, so much as a bookclub (off of goodreads)

message 112: by Linda (new)

Linda Goodreads friend recommended author

message 113: by Stacy (new)

Stacy I had already read another book by the same author and enjoyed it. That should definitely be one of the multiple choice answers - I read a lot of books by authors I have read before! LOL!

message 114: by Laurie (new)

Laurie I can hooked on an author the same way. If I find a book I really enjoy, I try to read everything by that author.

message 115: by Marcie (new)

Marcie I look for ideas here, but I also look for ideas on the shelves at my local library. When I find an author that I like I look for more books by that person. I use Good-reads to find more books by a particular author, then I go to the library website and place a hold on one of the books. I love the library. Read books, watch movies and listen to music for free.

message 116: by Eyehavenofilter (new)

Eyehavenofilter I literally walk into BAM scan the first table, which is usually the newest books published, look for the authors I like. Or a title, jacket, colour, subject that appeals to me. If not, I move on to the next, then the next, and so on! If all else fails I search the shelves aimlessly till I spot IT!
I read the inside jacket, or back jacket, if that hits a nerve I sit down and read it in one fell swoop. Usually I can squeeze in 2 on a Saturday, if I jack my self up with 3 large servings of coffee!

message 117: by Erin (new)

Erin Your recommendations and your readers reviews have helped me find my last 8 books. Goodreads has become my greatest resource for reading. Thank you!

message 118: by Saurabh (new)

Saurabh Another choice should be, "Out of curiosity."

message 119: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Brogan There's no "other," but I guess "friends" are close enough--I read about it from a comment on MetaFilter.

message 120: by Jane (last edited Mar 26, 2012 01:44PM) (new)

Jane The last book I read was from the library as I had bought another book by this author from a charity shop and found that this was a second book in a series. I hate reading books out of sequence so ordered the first book from the library.. Fantastic Fiction website is great for checking this sort if info..
Echoes from the Dead by Johan Theorin

message 121: by Danna (new)

Danna I borrowed it from a cousin, which is an option u left out.

message 122: by NoirBlogger (new)

NoirBlogger I'm reading The Impostor by Damon Galgut. This is because I was lent a previous book of his and enjoyed it so decided to read more

message 123: by Laura Lee (new)

Laura Lee I found the current book I am reading after I enjoyed a fiction book about a historical character and I researched and found a bio on the real person. A lot of my reading leads into something else.

message 124: by Angie (new)

Angie Wallis i inherited it from my dad's library :)

message 125: by Charlie (new)

Charlie Armstrong The book I'm currently reading is by an author I read everything by. I wasn't aware he had a new book coming out until it turned up on my Amazon recommendations. The same is true for the next book in my queue, come to think of it.

message 126: by [deleted user] (new)

Free from Amazon Kindle

Cori Arnold Brian wrote: "Doh, I just finished a book I read because I read another by the same author. :( (and it's not a series-type situation...the book I just finished was The Lovely Bones -- had read Lucky before)

I do that all the time too!

message 128: by Laura Lee (new)

Laura Lee Started new book that was advertised on goodreads. It's great!

message 129: by Nadia (new)

Nadia My mum's bookshelf! XD if there's a book I want to read I always check her bookshelf first ;)

message 130: by Furbjr (new)

Furbjr I read James Madison and the Making of America, by Kevin Gutzman. He contacted me, asking if I'd put his book up for consideration up on a book club website that I run. It was the winner, but I would have read it anyways. I didn't see that listed as a possible answer to the question.

message 131: by S.R. (new)

S.R. Weems I actually had to read the last book I read for school (Huckleberry Finn).

message 132: by Starbubbles (new)

Starbubbles My latest completed book was Daddy Long-Legs, which I "discovered" when it was referenced in a couple of other books I was reading. I saw it at a bookstore about a year ago, and felt it was fate. I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it.

message 133: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Twitter isn't listed, but this is how I'm finding an array of great books lately.

message 134: by T'leah (new)

T'leah Actually, I have been waiting for it for years because it was the next in the series of A Song of Ice and Fire. I think there should have been an option that covered books that are part of a series.

message 135: by Mathew (new)

Mathew Shaw I was looking for a particular book at the library, which wasn't in stock. However, another book on the same subject caught my eye, so I checked it out.

message 136: by Rusty (new)

Rusty Goodreads and Paperbackswap are my key sources for new reads. However, I do check out the library and the librarians' suggestions, too. Always check out thrift stores as well for something I would like to read.

message 137: by Daniel (new)

Daniel 2 of the 3 books I'm currently reading are books by authors whose other works I enjoyed. So, I'm reading them because I like the author. I do this a lot and have all of my life. I know other people do it too. Seems like it should be a choice on the poll.

message 138: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Bennett thrift stores & library book sales are the only place i get books so i voted bookstores even though it wasn't accurate.

message 139: by Scott (new)

Scott Reighard How do we keep reading (school or otherwise) relevant as we move forward in the 21st century? As a teacher, I am moving from English 11 and 12 back to English 8. I have not been there since '99. I want to focus on relevancy, literacy, and comprehension for that particular level, suggestions?

message 140: by Brent (new)

Brent My wife and I don't usually read anywhere near the same stuff, but once in a while she will recommend one for me and she rarely steers me wrong. Last year it was Hotel on the corner of bitter and sweet, which was terrific, and this time was Left early took my dog, also good.

message 141: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Cochran I put online bookstore but it was really a barnes and noble free friday book...in which i wish i had passed on sorry to say.

message 142: by Paul (new)

Paul Rosemeyer None of the above. I look up award winners on line them search for them here and within my local librarys' web site.

message 143: by Danna (new)

Danna It was actually a movie...

message 144: by Debra (new)

Debra The book I'm currently reading is from one of my favorite authors. This is not an option in the poll.

message 145: by Amanda (new)

Amanda The last book I read was A Study in Scarlet, starring the infamous Sherlock Holmes. What do I count that as? Heard in the media? It's a classic.

message 146: by Elizabeth (last edited Jul 10, 2012 08:46PM) (new)

Elizabeth Golding The last book I read was in the Friends of the Library room - withdrawn books for sale. For a buck or two I love going in there to buy a couple of books. I picked "Gun Games" because it was the most recent book in a series that I have been reading for years.

message 147: by [deleted user] (new)

I get books from everywhere. I download free on Kindle, I pick up books at Thrift stores and Goodwill or we exchange books around at work.

message 148: by Traci (new)

Traci I've had my Nook Color about a year and a half now and I tend to shop through B & N with it by checking out the free books offered and, if I like the free book, I'll actually pay money for the rest of the author's books. Since I've started with Goodreads this week, I've already added some books from the Recommendations to the I Want to Read list. So many books to read, not enough time :-)

message 149: by Serena (new)

Serena I picked library, because that's sort of it. . .

The last book I read was part of a series, of which I first read book three, which I picked up when working at the library after seeing it in the returns bin and being intrigued.

message 150: by Shawna (new)

Shawna Troyer "Other" The last book I read... indeed, the last 3 I finished reading I read because they sounded partially interesting, would be fast reads (they're romance novels) and were FREE. I snagged them from a clothing bank I volunteer at. Never heard of any of the books before. The other book I'm concurrently reading is Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (full series) and that's a re-read from long ago, recommended by friends.
