message 51: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Pearl I'm reading RemedyRemedyby Heidi C. Vlachand I found it at the SFContario convention where I met Heidi who is a delightful person by the way.

message 52: by Tam (new)

Tam From the Books On The Nightstand Podcast by Ann Kingman and Mucheal Kindness. "Defending Jacob"

message 53: by Janet (new)

Janet I usually learn about a book first in a published review: Tribune, People mag, etc. Then I check it out on Goodreads for the comments. I also look at the bestseller list but once again, that's usually in conjunction with a newspaper/magazine book review

message 54: by Helen (new)

Helen Mallon Actually the book in question was one my 1oth grade daughter had to read for school. I'd been wanting to learn more abt. S. Africa & apartheid, and she had a copy of Athol Fugard's "Master Harold" and the Boys. Another school parent (himself from S. Africa) had recommended it.
Very, very powerful.

message 55: by Naftoli (new)

Naftoli I am adamant about buying books from bookstores and I usually find out about them from the workers in the bookstores who are generally in book clubs and well-read. I sometimes find out about books on this site then go to Barnes & Noble to buy it or order it here. I like the Barnes & Noble near my house becuase it has a coffee shop, it's relaxing, and I like to be surrounded by books. I don't want to live in an "amazon.com" world where there are no bookstores so I refuse to order from Amazon.com.

message 56: by N. (new)

N. I pulled the last book I read off my shelves, but it was one I chose based on the fact that I loved the two previous books I'd read by the author. So . . . I'm a "none of the above".

message 57: by Jacqui (new)

Jacqui Hencsie Anne McCaffrey died and I had never read any of her novels. Little did I know that "Dragonflight" had pretty much everything I love in a novel. Scifi, Fantasy AND closed time loops

message 58: by Josephine (new)

Josephine None of the above: it was from Fiction-L, one of the myriad email groups for librarians.

message 59: by Ancestral (new)

Ancestral Gaidheal The book I last read was listed in the bibliography of another book; so I read it, too.

message 60: by Sheila (new)

Sheila L I read a book in a series...Lisa Gardner D.D. warren detective books...I've read every one now. I purchased it on my Kindliness so I answered online book store. No one recommended this series I just searched for detective novels. But I did completely get into "The Bride Collector" which was one of Goodreads suggestions. It was great but when I say the book is about a serial killer people make faces. Lol. It was a great thriller. Thanks Goodreads!

message 61: by Veronique (new)

Veronique Well my answer is not there - I found out about it through reading another book. Not unusual so should be taken into account?

message 62: by Jeff (new)

Jeff I read a different book by the same author, which happened to be a sequel to this one, do when I found the first book at a discount store in the book section for $3 I picked it up.

message 63: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I find many of my books in the references list at the end of books I have read.

message 64: by Laura (new)

Laura Last one was Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children and it was recommended on my Kindle storefront. But I often go on Amazon and find lists from other readers who really liked books I like.

message 65: by Sang (new)

Sang Kromah Although I find a lot of books on Goodreads and on publishers sites, I find myself spending hours at physical bookstores and buying books I've never heard of.

message 66: by Robin (new)

Robin I am reading Carleen Brice's "Children of the Water." I started reading it right after I finished her first book "Orange Mint and Honey." I heard of the former from a Goodreads friend, but read about the second book and decided to read it. I love her style of writing!

message 67: by lézengő reader (new)

lézengő reader The last one I finished was a gift, but with the one I'm reading now it's not this simple: first I saw it in a second-hand bookshop, liked the description but didn't buy it. Went to see some reviews (not only on GR) and blog posts about it. A couple of weeks later I espied it in the library and borrowed it, mostly because friends keep urging me to read fantasy.

message 68: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley Normally I find books either through recommendations or just browsing in a bookshop and something will catch my eye but the last one I read was an agatha christie and that was because I saw the series advertised as a partworks magazine on tv, the advert looked good so I thought 'What have I got to loose', found a copy at my fav second hand book shop and was really good, bit hard in places because of the language used but I enjoyed it, just waiting for the second and third to arrive in the post (I can't get over to the shop so they are posting them over to me)

message 69: by SillySuzy (new)

SillySuzy I am reading The Woman Who Was Not All There by Paula Sharp. I actually found it at a Bookcrossing meeting and it seemed like a fun read, which it is.

message 70: by Katerina (new)

Katerina Most of the time I just go to the library and look through the teen and adult fiction. Otherwise, I would borrow the books I found on goodreads. The only thing is that most of them aren't in the library.

message 71: by Shelly (new)

Shelly I find a lot of books through freebie Kindle services. Part of how I determine if I'm going to download them is to look at Amazon and Goodreads for their ratings. I also take recommendations from friends and look for authors who've participated in NaNoWriMo.

message 72: by AliciaJ (new)

AliciaJ Most of the books I've been reading lately have come from reviews I've seen here. It's been great.

message 73: by Caroline (new)

Caroline I found willow in a recommendation in goodreads and my friend had it at her desk so i just picked it up and started reading (this happens to me often) it was so good i went home and got it on my kindle!

message 74: by Gwyn (new)

Gwyn Haller The last book I read was a writers' reference book by Rory Miller, Violence. I found it researching and came upon his blog. Then I found it on Amazon. If I had realized it was on Smashwords, I would have purchased it there. Disturbing, graphic-excellent realistic content. 4 stars.
Normally, it is recommendations from friends, daughters, and Good Reads.

message 75: by Ben (new)

Ben What about books that are required for a class, or that are classics which you've heard of/know about simply through cultural osmosis?

That's cool! :)

message 78: by Marcus (new)

Marcus Amazon Listmania! Its a great way to get a list of books by similar authors or with similar themes and to see what other people thought about them

message 79: by Nancyspain (new)

Nancyspain Using a Kindle and accessing free books for it has meant that I am reading books that I may not have bothered with otherwise. Having only recently joined this site I know already that I am going to be heavily influenced by what others read and am looking forward to it. I picked up two books at the library recently simply because the authors' names begin with an A or a B as I have decided to do the A to Z challenge. It feels a bit like a mystery tour!

message 80: by Scott (new)

Scott Reighard When you're reading three books simultaneously, it's hard to choose just one response.

The Heart and the Fist: A great story about a humanitarian Navy SEAL, I stumbled across at the airport.

Protect and Defend by Vince Flynn: I have been wanting to read Flynn for quite a while.

Any Harlan Coben comes from being a fan of a very gifted writer.

I certainly look at recommendations and reviews on this website though.

Travis and Rebecca Right now I'm reading Rick Santorum's book, "It Takes a Family". I really wanted to know more about him (and where he stands on the political scale) so I went looking to see if he had written anything. I found his book at my local library. I'm glad I did, it's a very good book.

message 82: by Jamiegirl (new)

Jamiegirl Michelle wrote: "I wish I'd known about this website years ago! It's a great way to keep track of what y..."

Too true!! I'm busy with like 5 or 6 different series and without Goodreads it would have been difficult keeping track.

message 83: by Riobhcah (new)

Riobhcah It was on historicalnovels.info, a web site that has a list of historical novels.

message 84: by Jenn (new)

Jenn O'Brien I need an "other" category. It was a favorite author's lastest release.

message 85: by Gwen (new)

Gwen An "other" option would be nice. I'm working on a Stephen King reread - who remembers where/when they first heard about Stephen King? I certainly don't! I've made it up to Different Seasons.

message 86: by E (new)

E it's usually the next book in the series.

message 87: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames E wrote: "it's usually the next book in the series."

That's what it was for me too but that's not on the list.

message 88: by Svea (new)

Svea Well, I mostly get new book recommendations from here, but got the book I am currently reading from the authors home page, 'cause I read something else by her before the book I am currently reading.

❄️ Propertea Of Frostea ❄️ Bitter SnoBerry ❄ I got Tamasha in Bandargaon by my aunt on my Birthday. It was recommended by my fav English teacher

message 90: by Bonnie (last edited Feb 15, 2012 08:41AM) (new)

Bonnie Lethal by Sandra Brown - She was a co host on a TV mystery movie; so I thought I'd try one of her books. I'm happy I did, she may become one of my favorite authors.

message 91: by [deleted user] (new)

Mostly we trade books at work. But when I find a writer I really like, I try to get more of them

message 92: by Manuela (new)

Manuela Wilson The last book I read was Falling Under (Falling Under, #1) Hayes, Gwen * The cover appealed to me when I was at Wal-mart so i grabbed it. Now I am reading Dreaming Awake (Falling Under, #2) "Love this series."

message 93: by Lea Ann (new)

Lea Ann Mary Beth wrote: "The last book I read was required reading from one of my professors. It. was. terrible. :("

Now I'm curious. What was it?

message 94: by Amsyy (new)

Amsyy John Green shamelessly plugs his own books. That's how I found out. xD

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)

I love Nora Roberts and found some at Goodwill when I go book searching and I picked it up. I am anxiously waiting for my Kindle to come.

message 96: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith My answer isn't on here - review copy (from Netgalley)

message 97: by Kumonee (new)

Kumonee In a tiny rural town, I discovered a dusty old bookstore. The proprietor a woman about 80, surrounded by books.... walls and walls of books, all used. This amazing lady has guided me to many good authors, currently-Steve Berry.... this gal knows just about every genre, author, best reads, a walking Library of knowledge

message 98: by Farhia (new)

Farhia Last book I read was Savvy and I saw a friend reading it a long time ago so whenever I read or even think about it, I think about her.

message 99: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass I get almost all mine from the library, as I'm there 4 days a week. The others are random selections from the library's ebook collection.

message 100: by Kitty (new)

Kitty The last book I read was 'I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings' which I *think* I read about in Andrea Dworkin's text, Pornography, or in B*tch magazine.
