Poll

49039
John Quincy Adams

This poll will examine the choices for the John Quincy Adams reading selection which will be the next President covered in the Presidential Series. The order for the Presidents selected was determined by the group membership.

This selection will begin January 9, 2012 and will continue for three - four months - depending upon the length of the selection. The Bill Clinton selection will take a long time so rather than begin this selection around Christmas or other important religious or family holidays, we are waiting until January 9, 2012 to begin the John Quincy Adams selection.

This discussion will be led by Bryan. Bryan has an extraordinary background and will be a great moderator to lead this discussion. He has assumed the responsibilities for the Presidential Series reads and will be leading these book discussions.

We have added all of the books nominated on the John Quincy Adams thread and a few others. However, if you do not see your favorite book on this list; then just comment or pop me a note and I will immediately add it to this poll.

You can always change your vote at any time; so nothing is lost. Some of the John Quincy Adams's books deal with only a certain period of his life, some may be multi-volume (if that is ever the case - I always add both separately), some deal with other topics too; some are all encompassing, others deal with specific events in Quincy Adam's life or presidency and others are by the man, himself and some may be about other relationships or focused on specific issues during his life or presidency.

Before making your selection, please try to look up your choice and make sure it really is a book you are interested in; do not be lured in by the title. Also, check out the author and what others have said about the book before you (reviewers who you trust). Then of course, make your selection.

Bentley

Note: Be careful when making your selection: a great many of these books have the same title (John Quincy Adams) so be careful to make the right choice.

Jason, we love David McCullough but I am not certain he wrote a specific book about John Quincy Adams. We have read a few of McCullough's books and thoroughly enjoyed them. The above books on JQA were all nominated by group members. Is there a book by McCullough which focuses on John Quincy Adams that we missed? We are voting for a book about or by John Quincy Adams who is the next president after Clinton who will be discussed. Even the order of presidents discussed was voted for by the group membership.

Krystal I don't have an interest in American Politics I just love Royalty books. and I'm like super fascinated with England. So it doesn't matter to me which one but I voted anyway. and I don't want to do a groupread because im still stuck with formatting and i have too many books on my TBR list.

Bryan Craig Krystal wrote: "I don't have an interest in American Politics I just love Royalty books. and I'm like super fascinated with England. So it doesn't matter to me which one but I voted anyway. and I don't want to do ..."

I appreciate your vote, Krystal. We understand if you decide not to participate. By the way, he was Ambassador to England from 1814-1817. We will see if he liked the job or not.

Bentley Mod
Krystal, I am not sure what you are talking about in terms of formatting; on the single book discussions - if you are talking about the citation formatting - there is none - unless you mention a separate book; but maybe you were talking about something else. As far as American Politics - I can understand that you have a different preference but we appreciate your taking the time to give us your opinion and that is all we ask on these votes. I am sure that some time in the future we will have a read which deals with the British Monarchy or Royalty and that would be a fun read too. You will find a great many of us have a very long TBR list which is hard for us to handle. But we all love books. And Bryan is right; John Quincy Adams had a great deal of experience living and working abroad which should be right up your alley. And lastly thank you very much for taking the time to vote and express your opinion.

I went ahead and cast my vote for John Quincy Adams A Public Life, a Private Life by Paul C. Nagel by Paul C. Nagel. From what I have read, it has gotten the most, and best, reviews. Also, I hear it comes with a neat little recipe for lemonade!

message 13: by Bentley (new)

Bentley Mod
Well even if you just want a good recipe for lemonade it sounds worth it (smile). Thank you for voting Tom; we appreciate it and your comments. I have also heard good things about both the Nagel book and the Wheelan book - it was a tough decision for me too.

Voted (I think) for John Quincy Adams A Public Life, a Private Life by Paul C. Nagel by Paul Nagel
Don't know much about American politics or Presidents but having read the reviews thought this account sounds really interesting.

Kay, I think a lot of folks agree with you. I think the Wheelan book and the Nagel book seem to be the top contenders. Thank you for your vote.

Dick, I do not think we had that title up there. I will add it and then you can come back and vote for it. It sounds like it covers the entire family. It doesn't absolutely focus solely on John Quincy Adams but it does look like an interesting book and other books we have nominated have a segmented focus as well.

UPDATE: @ Dick: I have added your nomination. It is probably at the bottom of the list until you vote. So please look for it and just vote for your selection. I hope this helps. If you have any problems in voting etc.; then just reach out to one of the moderators and we can help you.

Thank you for recommending a book that we did not have on the poll. All of the books on the list have been nominated by the members.
