If you want to spend Halloween questioning every noise your house makes, try Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman or Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell. If you want to be psychologically scarred, The Troop by Nick Cutter. Happy haunting! 👻🖤
For psychological horror, try the shining be Stephen king—classic. For short stories, try anything by h p lovecraft—the call of Cthulhu is amazing. For something to make ur brain hurt, try house of leaves by mark z danielewiski. CW for each:
Shining: abuse, gore, death of a parent, one non graphic sex scene, easily skipped if you’re like me.
Lovecraft: gore, insanity, monsters, etc.
House of Leaves: insanity, murder, some graphic sex that I skipped. Also has a claustrophobic feel that is very unsettling.

It’s not overly scary but it is like a spooky-ish kinda boom. It’s the Bellwoods Game lwk forgot who the author is tho
There are quite a few parts in Witchcraft for Wayward Girls (by Grady Hendrix) that are truly terrifying.
