Hey everyone!
I'm looking for books where grief is truly the central theme, not just a subplot or something that mainly supports a romance or another storyline.
I’ve heard that Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors is a great example of a book that really explores grief, loss, and the different ways people deal with it, and I’m looking for something similar.
I’m especially interested in literary fiction with complex characters and nuanced, realistic portrayals of grief. I’m not necessarily looking for stories where grief is quickly overcome or neatly resolved. I’d love books that really sit with loss and explore how it affects people, relationships, and identity. How you live with it and how it affected your life. About loss. Just about grief.
Memoirs are welcome too, but I’m mainly looking for novels.

I am not sure if this fits exactly in that bracket but Breathe with Me by Becka Mack is based around grief. It’s basically a journey of a couple who wants to conceive but are struggling to and all the struggles they face and how they deal with it individually and together.It’s extremely heartbreaking and it had me bawling my eyes out.
Again I am not sure if it fits yours ask but it’s worth a try!
Hiya,I'm not sure if you've read Ashley Poston's books but most of her books have an element of grief and all of them are different types of grief.
"The Someday Garden" (her most recent book) explores the grief and loss of the FMC's best friend.
"Dead Romantics" explores the loss of the FMC's dad.
"The Seven Year Slip" focuses on the FMC's grief relating to her auntie.
"Sounds Like Love" looks at anticipatory grief where the FMS is grieving someone who is still alive but is less and less themselves everyday.
I will say that all of the above mentioned books do have a primary plot of romance and because of this they DO all have a 'happily ever after' in their own way but as someone who has grieved in their own complex way, I deeply enjoyed reading the above books because of how the grief is portrayed.
Blue sisters is great, and so is Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt by Ben Reeves!
Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt by Ben Reeves is all about death and grief. I on cried every single page.
I think “Breaking Point” by mads rafferty was a good story that embodied grief perfectly in both main characters in different ways. I’m not sure if you’re gonna have the same opinion but either way I recommend this one. I’m also not sure is what you’re looking, it’s a sports romance (even tho the sport is not the center of it) with a fake relationship trope. <3
Loved one by Aisha Muharrar A story about a woman dealing with grief after her ex boyfriend (who was a famous musician) dies and her friendship with his last girlfriend
I've heard good things about Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah. It's on my tbr. You could look up the premise if you're interested!
The Collected Regrets of Clover
Promise me Sunshine by Cara Bastone. It’s a romance but grief is a huge theme that intertwines with the story it’s such a beautiful book.
Not sure if you’ve read any of these but here are my favs!!: Razorblade tears by S.A Cosby (two fathers grieving for their dead sons—full of regrets and their need for vengeance), The goldfinch by Donna Tartt (young boy sees his mother get killed in an accident, and follows his grief at all different points in his life and how it never stops impacting him), Clytemestra by Constanza Casati (Greek mythology retelling—mother’s grief for her children taken from her in brutal and insignificant ways and also grief for yourself), Marytr by Kaveh Akbar (a man’s journey through his grief over his mom and dad in two completely different ways) Happy reading!🤗

The garbage bag girl by Celeste L. Edmunds is the only one I can think of but I was literally bawling by the end of this one

this is truly an emotional series, with much complex characters. throughout the series, people will experience grief & losses, but this is also a romance book which can make the story kind of fairytail-ish.

this is one of my favorite books ever, and the thing i loved most with it was how deeply and truly ashley described and wrote about grief after losing someone. she's a very talented author, and her writing style is so heartfelt and beautiful. this is labeled as a magical realism romance though, but in my opinion this is my best recommendation for you 🌟

this is jeanette mccurdy's memoir. she's most known from sam&cat as sam, and her book is really emotional. it has very short chapters and is extremely fast paced which i loved.
