G (my editor/new EIC) (guy)
E (new EIC) (girl)
I hear my name being yelled by my editor/new EIC. I looked up and I nearly dropped my phone. I released my hand shakily from my mouse, believing I'm in trouble. I ran over. I was being beckoned into the secret closet. Or, at least, that's what my journalism community liked to refer to.
It was more like a backroom. Four triangle tables set up in a beautiful clover style. A red button that red the word "stop" was left behind, presumably by my teacher.
"Could you close the door while you're at it?" E asked. I turned back around to close it, but it refused to close. I tried once more with the same results.
"It won't close. I think it's broken," I said, my face on fire. By now, I had put two and two together and I came to the conclusion that this was it. This was my interview.
"That's okay, then. Just close it as much as you can," G said.
I did as asked, I walked towards the four desks. I took a seat opposite him.
"You want to become the opinion editor? Coming for my job, I see," G said, leaning on the table.
I glance his way. "Well, considering that you were signing up to become EIC, someone has to take over. So I thought, why not?"
They both nod approvingly and laugh as well. It lightened the mood, and the red on my cheeks finally went down.
"We know that you already answered this in the form, but how many realistic hours can you work on the paper?"
I took a deep breath. I could answer this one. This was hardly a question. "I think it depends. I'm taking two AP classes next year. AP Lang and AP seminar. I'm well aware of the workload for AP seminar, but I'm going to be (grade level) next year, which means I won't get Mr. S. I'll have an easier teacher."
"Oh yeah. We're well aware of AP seminar since we took it. The workload....is tricky," E answered for both of them.
"And I'm willing to work around it. My dream schedule would be to have AP seminar one day and journalism the next. If not, then I would probably work on AP seminar first. I love journalism but, AP seminar is my first priority. Probably the next day, I would work on Journalism. And considering that I don't go out most weekends, and that my martial arts just closed, I am able to work on the weekends as well."
"What do you bring to the table?" E asked me, once they had taken a few notes.
"S-sorry? I didn't quite catch that," I told her. I had, in fact, heard her. I need time to collect myself and realize this is it. This was what I wanted.
E repeated herself once more.
I glanced down quickly at my hands. They were fidgeting. Not a good sign. "Well, I do have leadership qualities. I have been a leader through middle and elementary school. And even now in high school. Even though you may not have seen those abilities quite yet, they will come to light. I listen to others and I'm willing to compromise on what my peers want to write about."
E nods once more. Her smile started to reassure me. I started getting more comfortable.
"How about collaboration?" G asked.
"I'm sorry. I'm not quite understanding what you mean."
"Well we mean like-" E get cut off by G.
"Next year, we look forward to collaborating with other sections. How would you connect with the editors and ensure that happens? We are of course the opinion section, so we are a lot more diverse and we have a lot more freedom with that."
"Well, for example, take entertainment. If one of my writers wanted to write something entertainment based, I would send them to the Entertainment editor and they can work it out. Since entertainment writes reviews, we can provide our opinion on maybe the same source. There might be a show that one of our writers has watched, and entertainment as well. With News & Features, they could write about the news obviously.
"I know we wrote politics this year, much to my dismay. We all saw how that went. But, of course, I am open to my writer writing their opinion about it. Or maybe a school event? We have millions of school events here! We can get an opinion on that as well. All the activities, clubs, that can be covered. And I personally am not a sports fan, but by all means. There are people in this school who are huge sports fans. We can always cover the opinion of sports as well."
They nod approvingly once more. G intakes a huge breath. I know something bad is going to come out of that mouth of his. "As your editor this year, I have worked with you on a personal basis."
That line could not be good.
". . . and I know you are very . . . lax on deadlines."
I felt that commentary like a gut punch. I showed no visible signs of being called out, and I knew I shouldn't be surprised that this was mentioned. I knew it was going to come out one way or another. I may not have had an answer at the ready, but I answered it with ease. "I'm aware. I'm also aware that I'm taking AP seminar next year. I am willing to put into the effort for AP seminar which will help put in the effort for next year in journalism next year. I will be honest, I am more lax this year because I had no homework.
"But you've never seen me with homework either. To be honest, most of my middle school was filled with homework and I was always on top of it. And next year? I am going to be on top of it, if that's what it takes."
"Okay then. Thank you and you may go," E dismissed me.
"Are we going to figure out if we make it today or.....?" I asked before I stood up.
"No. That's saved for next year," G answers.
"Okay." I get up from my chair and head over to the door.
"Could you close the door behind you, please?" E asked.
"Uh...will you settle for I will close it as much as I can?" I asked, jokingly because we forgot once again that the door was broken.
"That's fine."
They also asked my friend (who thankfully had no interest in becoming editor.)They only asked her bc she was a strong canidate apparently..........that makes me nervous heh.
IDK IF I DID WELL
