okay this is kind of a rant so feel free to skip😭
Lately I have been thinking about this whole trend of books getting adapted into movies and TV shows. Like Better Than the Movies, The Love Hypothesis, Off Campus, and now Windy City too.
And don’t get me wrong, I LOVE seeing these books get the recognition and hype they deserve. These authors absolutely deserve it💖!!!
But a tiny selfish part of me hates the idea of sharing these characters with people who have never actually read the books. Like suddenly everyone is obsessed with these characters and claiming they’re “the love of their life” when book readers spent HOURS emotionally attached to them first .😭 There’s just something so special about reading a book, imagining the characters in your own head, feeling every little moment with them, screaming into pillows at 2am… and I feel like adaptations rarely capture that same magic.
And honestly, for every adaptation that turns out amazing like Harry Potter, there are like five others that completely miss the vibe of the book (AGGGTM I am looking at you 👀) No shade to anyone who watches adaptations without reading the books first btw 😭 I think I’m just weirdly protective over these characters because they feel so personal to the book community. Like they were OUR little secret for the longest time!!! 💌 Idk maybe I’m just being dramatic and gatekeepy, but I’m curious if anyone else feels this way too??

I love adaptations, but the books are always better!!
YES. These characters were our little secret!!!!
I genuinely don't care as long as it's good
More adaptations please, everyone deserves to meet them

Totally!! I think the off-campus adaption was amazing, but honestly, I don't want boys of tommen or the windy city series to be adapted...

I totally agree with you, reading a book and imagining the characters is a completely different experience than watching a movie, I prefer reading the books, but there are adaptations that have surprised me and are quite good.

Aashita wrote: "YES, thats the thing i LOVE about books, we can love the same book but have completely different imaginations about it and its such a beautiful thing!!!"Yes, that's what makes the book something special and personal, and that's what I love about the book. For example, although I've heard that Off Campus was very well done, I haven't wanted to watch it because I haven't read Hannah and Garret's book yet, although I've read practically the entire Elle Kennedy collection about Briar University, but when I saw the actors they chose, they didn't match at all how I imagine the characters, especially John Logan, and Tucker.
agreed!! They are doing too much with this book-to-movie adaptations. Some stories deserve to stay on pages.
I personally feel like not every book needs a screen adaptation. Sometimes the movie or TV version misses the heart of the story, changes key details, or doesn't capture the book's narration and atmosphere. That said, when an adaptation is done well and stays true to what made the book special, I'm all for it. It really comes down to how much care and respect is given to the original story

yupp, i am yet to start off-campus series. I might give the show a shot after that maybe

💯 I feel the characters often don’t receive the depth and appreciation they deserve, and the story is reshaped to fit the adaptation rather than being told as it was intended in the book. That said, when an adaptation stays true to the heart of the story and is executed well, I can definitely appreciate it
I thought I was the only one who felt this way. Honestly, I've never really said it out loud because I always thought maybe I was just being paranoid or overly protective. Most of my non-reader friends have already watched the Off-Campus adaptation, and I haven't. And I'm okay with that... (maybe not 😭).
But whenever they start bragging about it, a tiny part of me wants to throw water in their faces. Sorry, but not sorry. 🤷🏻♀️
Sometimes I think adaptations are a good thing. They help more people discover books, bring attention to authors, and grow the community. And I genuinely love that for the authors because they deserve the recognition.
But other times? 😮💨
Absolutely not.
Some books are better left as books. They don't need an adaptation in the first place. There's something special about experiencing a story through the pages, imagining everything yourself, and feeling like these characters belong to a small corner of the book world.
Maybe that's selfish. Maybe it's a little gatekeep-y. But there are definitely some books that I don't want adapted because I don't want the magic to get lost... and, if I'm being honest, because I don't want everyone to know about them. 😭📚

YES! i completely agree, its also not very feasible to get the whole books essence packed into a two three hour movie and it ends up leaving out on the subtle magical moments of the book. But yupp, we always love a good adaptation!!

A HUNDRED TIMES YES!! that's exactly how i feel too. Like for me book reading is such a pure experience and then to wake up one day and have people who might never experience that magic suddenly be like "oh they are the loml", like hello?? and i am all for a great adaptation but when production houses do it just to hop into the hype rather than actually give the book a larger audience it sucks and it kinda shows through the series/movies also.
Sometimes, I myself need screen adaptations!!!!Out of your list, I only read 'Better than the movies' because my daughter reco-ed (yes! My daughter is now big enough to role-reverse 🤗) & I hope that the adaptation is a good one!
But I was very curious about "Project Hail Mary"... I had loved the book... & The Movie is good in some ways (characterization 🥹) but not so good in some ways (all the SCI of the sci-fi has been truncated)
& I recently read a fairy-tale called "the Summer War"... & ... seriously... I loved it & I really wish someone would make an old-style 2-D animation movie of it !!!!!!
ikrrr, thank you. glad i'm not alone in feeling this way either!i feel like we all love the same book for different reasons and the same reasons all at once, like we find ourselves in it somehow, or the selves we wish we were, or the stories and places we grow fond of, and especially the words themselves. that's what i cherish the most, i think. and when it becomes a film, it almost feels like THAT something has been wrested away from us, like that private thing between the readers and the pages. idk if i'm making sense atp lol 😭😭 but yes, i don't mind adaptions for some, but these days, it's just too many i swear.

omg!! even i recommend books to my mom, it's almost like i have a tbr ready for her.
but yeah i completely get what you are saying, for me all that matters is capturing that magic of the book and most of them struggle to do that and then its like a huge let down
phideɭia [ia] wrote: "ikrrr, thank you. glad i'm not alone in feeling this way either!i feel like we all love the same book for different reasons and the same reasons all at once, like we find ourselves in it somehow, ..."
YES EXACTLY!!!! we can love the same book for completely different reasons and then adaptations leave no room for that imagination or interpretation to run wild and that kind of makes me feel deprived of the whole special experience. And yes there have been some great adaptations and I am all for it but now it feels like people are just cashing in on the trend
