Ok so I'm genuinely contemplating on ditching my book that im writing and starting over, but the thing is, is that i spent 9 months planning it and all the plot twists, romance, historical accuracy etc. Its currently in third person and im lowk regretting it and i want to change it into first person. should i just ditch my WIP and start a new one, say a different genre? or should i keep on going in 3rd person or change it to 1st person (also plz invite friends!!)

nooo!!! u can do this!!

You should really think about it and only edit some parts that you really think are bad and keep editing if you need to (write-in)

You should just change the parts you don't like but keep writing it. (write-in)

Clara Ok, so does it feel like this story is being forced out of you? If yes, then start a new book. Something you love more.

message 2: by Clara (new)

Clara If not, and your just feeling burnt out, then take a LONG break. I'm talking like a month or two. Read more books that have to do with the genre your writing, and then come back to it, rejuvenated!

message 3: by Nadine (last edited Apr 24, 2026 06:05PM) (new)

Nadine Mahmoud if i were you i would finish what im doing because all your hard work, and then maybe if i feel motivated would i write another book 1st persone diff genra ect..

message 4: by Sonya (new)

Sonya Agreed with Clara! If you don’t have a passion for it anymore than ditch it! 🙃

Makenzie (exam semi hiatus) okay i think that you might be going into a reading slump but with writing because clearly you are dedicated and have worked so hard but i think you need to take a small change of pace. maybe you can put your current wip on pause and start writing something in a different genre, even if you don’t want it to go anywhere or anything like that but just like as a palette cleanser (i know i literally just explained a reading slump but whatever😭)

message 6: by Abbie ;) (new)

Abbie ;) I would say keep writing in 3rd person and then when you finish that one make a 1st person one.

no, not really, I was seriously in love with the plot and characters when i was planning it, and whilst i was first writing it. now i just feel stuck, and new ideas have been forming in my head of a new book😭

message 8: by CG (new)

CG Nelson You’ve spent sooo much time on it, I feel like you should keep it! If you aren’t feeling it rn, you could put it on pause…but I wouldn’t get rid of it!

message 9: by Hailey (new)

Hailey Whitehead Girl, I feel you. I’ve been working on my book for a year now. It’s a four book series, but when it comes to actually writing, I keep getting stuck rewriting chapters over and over. I think it’s just because we’re so passionate about it and want it to be perfect. Don’t be afraid to take your time and step away when you need to. Wait for when the ideas start flowing again, but don’t abandon it.

Then write a new book, about the ideas you have, or write all of the ideas that you have on paper or docs, whatever so when you feel the neeed to write a new book, you already have ideas and everything.

aw tyy ml🩷 i hope so... im just stuckkk

Kaylou of the Hollow ✨ ok for all of ya'll asking what my book is about, its a murder mystery set in 1889 London. it will take ages for me to explain everything but technically its about this girl, Collette Southbutters-Hampton-Burnett, who runs away from her cold, cruel home and aristocratic family at 17 and trains to become a nurse under the alias of Lettie Burne. fast forward ten years (this is where the book sets off), she ditches her job as a nurse and has become one of the first female journalists at the Evening Standard. one day she is sent a telegram about a murder of a poet by the name of Edward Thomas. she is then sent to the scene of the crime just to interview the officers and get a great story for the newspaper. (Edward was murdered in his study and all of his poems were stolen, nothing else) she is then quietly ushered inside by Edward's stepdaughter, Evangeline Carter, who gives Collette (Lettie) four poems that Edward gave her to keep safe. Evangeline says that she doesnt trust the police with the poems and that she wants Collette to decipher them and report back to her what they mean, because if the murderer stole the poems, these four poems edward gave her to keep saf emust mean something.
anyways long story short, Collette deciphers them, which leads her to an opera, where she meets someone from her past whom she hates (and ends up falling in love with🤭😝), called Alexander Blackwell, and is then she is forced to work with him (to her dismay). they then try to decipher other clues and things they found, Collette almost gets killed more than once, couple plot twists later, murderer is found, Collette realises shes in love, best friend gets shot, sadness, and then Collette, Alexander, Alexanders brother, Collette's friend Beatrice and another girl Violet, form a detective society in his honor

emily (the book dragon) At the end of the day, I say do whatever you feel is best. I’ve ditched many books to work on others, but just because you pause on a book doesn’t mean you’ll never come back to it. I say take a small break from your book, maybe write a short story or novella, without any pressure or need to be accurate or perfect, and then go back to your WIP. That way you can take a breather while also still keeping those creative muscles active and then you can go back to the book you’ve dedicated a lot of times to

message 18: by EnchantedEva (new)

EnchantedEva I’ve had this experience before. Usually, changing the pov fixes a lot of it! But if you still feel like the story isn’t working, give it a rest and come back to it later! It can even be years later. Sometimes you’re just not ready to tell the story yet, but if it’s one that means something, the time will come eventually🫶🏼

Shades || Tyger, Tyger Kaylou of the Hollow ✨ wrote: "ok for all of ya'll asking what my book is about, its a murder mystery set in 1889 London. it will take ages for me to explain everything but technically its about this girl, Collette Southbutters-..."

Please write this XD I think 1st or 3rd could work; it's more about whatever you think fits the story.
I think, like Emily said, a break doesn't hurt. Find another subject you're passionate about, or maybe just go back to the bones of your story to remember WHY you fell in love with it. I find myself doing that often; sometimes, I just overthink it and think it's worthless, but, really, I just needed to think about why I love it and what I can fix to make me fall in love with it all over again.

Haylee (Jesus's Version) :D It depends! If you don’t like some things about the story, I’d totally recommend starting a new draft! I did it and while it was a little stressful at first, I feel a lot better about my current draft.
It’s your story! Do what you believe is best for it!! Best of luck!! 🫶🏼

message 21: by Lyra (new)

Lyra Kane I had the same problem recently actually lol. I've was working on it for seven months and I quit on it bc I realized I had no motivation for it. I also had a better idea anyway. But if ur js struggling bc you don't know what POV to write from...well one of my friends said something that helped me decide:
First Person: If you want the audience to focus on the MC (its also easier to write)
Third Person: If you want the audience to focus on the setting and the plot (and used for more than one POV)

I was originally gonna make mine third person but the setting didn't matter to me. The character did. The character WAS the plot. If the character has a big backstory, I would say first person is best bc the audience can connect with the character and watch their emotional growth. If the character has a minor backstory (I mean....it can still be impactful but compared to the plot) then JS go for third person.

Kaylou of the Hollow ✨ @Lyra THANK YOUUU omds that helps so much!

message 23: by Maha (new)

Maha You should do what you love, what you are eager to do. If you think that this way the story won't be good and it's not going your way, so you can ever change it, it's your story anyways. You already have imagined the whole story and how it would be the perfect, you know that better than anyone.
And if you really wanna turn the story plot to the first person and don't wanna work on your wip from the starting, so why don't you just plot a twist and turn the whole story towards the first person. Then you don't have to erase your whole WIP, what you've worked so hard on, but you have to write quite more and think too.
Well, do whatever you think is the best for your story.
Good luck Clara.

message 28: by La Ale (new)

La Ale girl I totally get you, once I was writing a story and after something like 7 chapters I deleted everything bc it was not good enough and I completely changed it.
so if you don't like it at all, I think you should change it and write something u like more, but if you're just in doubt try to write something else and then re-read this and decide what to do

(i hope you understand bc english is not my first language and I don't speak it so well)

message 29: by La Ale (new)

La Ale uhm wait, I didn't remember your plot was so good. okay so maybe you should forget it for a while, just write another story you have and idea for and if in future you feel it you will return on this

sorry maybe I'm not that helpful lol😭

message 32: by Sonel (new)

Sonel Jami I think you should do whatever you see fit. I too worked on a story for a year until I realised it’s just a fan fiction of stranger things with different character names heh 😅

So I started new. So there is no right answer. Just do it if you feel like it :)

✧~Ellery~✧ {jesus is my strength in the storm} If you really love your story? Keep with it, even if it requires a lot of editing. Your story will never become anything more than a scramble of words if you don't put your time and care into it. If it means taking a little break from the story before continuing, so be it. But don't give up unless you no longer love it, because if you don't love it, your readers won't either. If you don't invest time and care in your own characters, your readers won't either. Happy writing! <3

message 34: by kenna (new)

kenna I totally understand how you're feeling. I had written 100 pgs of a story I was very passionate about and then looked back over and realized I didn't love it anymore and didn't want to continue. I still have it, but I put it to the side and wrote other things in the meantime. I agree with everyone else's advice. I would take a break. If you keep thinking about it and feeling the urge to write, continue it. As for whether or not to edit to first person, that can always been adjusted after the book is completed. That's a lot of work, though, so personally I'd make sure you absolutely love the story before you change the narrative 💛🤗 hope this helps, friend!

message 35: by Callie Rae (last edited 5 hours, 36 min ago) (new)

Callie Rae Is it the POV that is throwing you off of your story? If so I can maybe help you. I haven't finish my WIP yet but I have changed the POV once already and it is a little annoying but it can help you enjoy your story more. I suggest just printing out what you have so far and going through to edit it to fit the POV you want.

Or, depending on your word count because if you have, like, 60k words I wouldn't recommend what I'm about to say, you could just work on starting over. Like start at the beginning of your story and start writing again if you want. Like I said it might not be smart to do that if your really far into it but it is always an option.

Lastly, you could set it aside and not ditch it completly but just save it for another time of your life when you think you would like to start it again.

I really suggest not ditching it because of how hard you said you've worked on it but if thats what you want to do you have my support even though you don't know me. You know whats best for you and your story so do what you think is best.
