Maisy Jones I annotate with a pencil, so I just keep one handy, and whenever a line or quote makes me feel any emotion, I'll just underline it and write a comment or draw a lil picture. I also like doing it this way because it means that if I get bored or something, I can just take a break to draw a fish in the margins or something like that. I think coloured tabs would work in a similar way where you just tab where you feel anything in a colour that feels right for the scene, but idk I personally like pencil because it feels more personal. Hope this helped! :D

oh that's really smart!! I want to start annotating but I'm scared of writing in my books with ink. I don't know why I didn't think of just using a pencil. I'll def use this! thank you! <3

Lindsey_reads_books I take a photo with my phone. On the picture I highlight the section and can add my notes. If I have more then one for a book I make an album with the book's title. I read a lot of library books or ebooks, I can't mark in those.

nika ⸆⸉ I'm gonna be really detailed, because I love this!
okay, so I haven't mustered up the courage to write on the actual pages of my books (I've only ever done so for a college class when the professor told us he wouldn't give credit for our assignments if we didn't write in the books)...
so what do I do/use?
I use sticky tabs (my favorites are by the brand Morandi which I got off of Amazon in a set), and I color code them the same in every book (some people find a color tab that matches the book cover and use one color for everything, but I like to be organized)
my color key:
PINK - platonic, familial, or romantic love, or just scenes that I love
PEACH - important info
YELLOW - funny/witty
LIGHT GREEN - well written, lyrical and poetic quotes
DARK GREEN - world building, details about time/place
BLUE - sad/heartbreaking
(but you can do what works best for you)
I also have a set of clear post-its for whenever I want to write down my thoughts, feelings, assumptions, notes, doodle, and even underline (since they're see-through)
and even if I hadn't annotated anything throughout, at the end of the chapter, I always try to write a little review and/or predictions before continuing to the next one.
you can use any post-its for any of that, or if you're brave, you can do all of that straight on the book pages! :)
happy annotating!!!!!

caitlyn (brekker's version) for me, i have a seperate notebook where i write my thoughts and can decorate it based on the book cover as well, just because I don't like to write on my book pages! with tabbing, I pick a few colours that match the cover and tab them either based on how aestheticly pleasing they look together, or what the colour the scene/quote/etc gives off out of the colours i pick! :)

message 11: by Chloe (new)

Chloe I start by writing in pencil and marking in pencil unless it's a go-to author. Then if I'm really enjoying it, I'll switch to highlighters and ink!

message 12: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty for annotating I just go straight for it with a pen and write inside the margins with my notes, then I color code sticky tabs and put them on the pages so that they're easy to reference when I go to write my analysis and I can just pull quotes without hunting too hard for them. when I read for pleasure instead of analysis, I like to just highlight my favorite parts/quotes with a color that matches the cover of the book

message 15: by Ellen (new)

Ellen I do, but it depends on the book! And even then it's nothing bookstagram worthy lol All I do it take a few colored tabs, figure out what feelings I might have whole reading it and the tab accordingly. I will even underline those moments in pencil. I feel a sense of accomplishment when I do that and it makes certain books better because I'm dwelling on those moments longer. I don't think I'd ever go as far as to write in the books though, mostly because I don't like my handwriting at all! lol Also I don't want to skew anyone's thoughts if they borrow my book and see what I've written.

message 16: by Magical_Bookworm (new)

Magical_Bookworm I don't annotate. I'm kind of interested in it but I don't know if I want to commit to it. You could always watch videos on YouTube of how people annotate their books to see what interests you. Maybe start with just tabbing and then you could highlight and write later to see if you like it. There is a thing called clear sticky notes so that you can write your thoughts down but not on the actual book.
