Well, it really would make more sense, lots of characters appear and the worlds are strictly interconnected and on the timeline they happen at the same time. But it’s not really necessary to understand the story.

It will make so much more sense if you do! Those characters show up in the back half of TMI and it gives a lot more background about them. But I do understand it’s a hassle
they are set in a timeframe exactly after each other, so it makes so much more sense to read first TMI and then TDAI also personally read The Infernal Devices after TMI and before TDA in order to not get spoiled... but yeah it's a hassle.
If you know you never want to read the other series, go and start with TDA, you will understand the plot with no problems, but you will miss out on easter eggs etc

I’m just really not in the mood to read them, they’re so long and I already watched the show and movie 😭💀 if that works HAHA
Carolina wrote A respectful hard pass on the tv show 😂🙅🏼♀️
I’d say I’d you’re familiar with some parts of it, skim through that
And then if you haven’t read TID, also read those because they’re so good
The background info will make things so much better I promise
I would say instead of reading TMI to understand TDA search the internet for some information or watch spoilery reviews just don't read TMI, i cant recommend it to anyone 🥲

I read TID and I loved them, I just don’t want to read TMI because it’s too long and just no hahahaha

The last TMI book, City of Heavenly Fire introduces alot of the main characters of TDA and alot of their character arcs revolve around dealing with the big events of that book so if you really don’t feel like reading the whole TMI series I’d at least read that one.

The mortal instruments are soooo good and you will like the dark artifices way better after reading TMI. Plus you understand the characters more and know some of them from TMI
TDA is my favourite cassie clare series, but i'd say to read both TMI and TID because the characters from both series are mentioned and show up in this book. I think it just makes the reading experience much more enjoyable when u know the people that r showing up and u understand the jokes about certain families, like the Herondales.
The fun thing about the whole shadowhunter world is that all the books are connected somehow. In TID the characters are mentioned in TMI and TDA and you could spoil yourself TID. And like some comments say characters from TID are introduced in the last book they are right! In my personal opinion, I prefer TID and TDA compared to TMI. So if you want you can read the first two and just read summaries of the mortal instruments if you want!
