Eldi Qevani It's very hard for me,it depends,if I rate a book 4.5 stars but its more like a 4 star I give it 4 stars and if its more like a 5 star I rate it 5 stars...does that even make sense?😂😂😂

message 2: by Rain (new)

Rain It depends on the book and whether I feel more comfortable with rounding it up or down in that case

message 3: by hillary (last edited Aug 06, 2018 01:50AM) (new)

hillary It depends on the book! I do both. For example, when I give a 3.5 stars rating but I feel like I enjoyed the book more than other books I gave 3 stars to, I round up. And viceversa.
I hope this makes sense 😂

message 4: by Tani (new)

Tani It depends on the book but I mostly prefer to round it up.

message 5: by Miriam (new)

Miriam It depends on the fun I had while reading it and my overall impression of the book.

Oh of course! I definitely should've added that as an option, I didn't even think about that.

Added another choice! Totally forgot about that :)

message 8: by Nicko Mocanu (last edited Aug 06, 2018 03:00AM) (new)

Nicko Mocanu (Elril Moonweaver) I have my own ratings from 0-10, and I put the stars between certain thresholds.
It looks sorta like this:
8.50 - 5 stars - 10
7.10 - 4 stars - 8.49
5.10 - 3 stars - 7.09
2.50 - 2 stars - 5.09
0.00 - 1 star - 2.49 (trust me I've encountered books that were so bad I couldn't even give a full point rating/half a star)
This rating is based on a number of different categories I rate distinctly such as setting, plot, main and secondary characters, antagonists, writing (optional: magic system, pacing, audiobook) and finally enjoyability.

I don't really find the star rating all that reliable, because I don't consider a book that I rated an 8, to be a 5 star rating (if 5 star is between 8 and 10). If I give something an 8, it's a 4 star rating for me. I give 5 stars for anything above 8.50. And I never go for + or ++, because nothing is perfect and the closest a book has reached a 10 for me is Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderon, which I gave a 9.91.

Also I dunno what to answer for your poll, because it does not take into count the idea that people have their own rating, that subjectively means something else to them. Goodreads rating is just a means to a establish a threshold for my own ratings for me.

JBooks Depends on the book....

Riley Ashby sometimes i round up or down depending on the average rating. I read something recently that i gave 3.5 rounded up to 4 because the average rating was something like 2.75, and i thought it was worth more than that at least. or if something has over 4 stars and i think that's exaggerating, i'll go down to 3

message 11: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Peppercorn 9 times out of 10 I round up.

message 12: by Mort (new)

Mort There must be a reason why I'm not giving it 5 stars, but I'd much rather go up with a book whose average is underrated in my opinion, or an Indie author who makes a living from them.

That's totally understandable! Didn't want to make the poll too complicated, that's why I didn't include anything else :)

Oh interesting! I'll probably start to do that as well :) Didn't think about it before.

message 15: by astrid (new)

astrid I round it up, because there is this rule to round up whenever the next number would be 5 or more, duh...
If I do not want to do that, I won't give x.5 stars, but only x or x.4 stars. (:
Easy.

I do also.

message 17: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Jones Depends... if it's a good 3.5, then I'd round up to 4. But if it's only just 3.5, then I guess I'd round it down!

message 18: by fox (new)

fox I rarely give 5 stars. But if I'm trying to decide between a lower or higher rating, I will often go with the lower unless the book has impressed me somehow.

message 19: by Colleen (new)

Colleen It depends on the book and what I read just before it. If I rate a book 4.5 stars but the book I read before it was an amazing 5 stars, then I'm more likely to round down just because I can't help comparing them. But I'm more lenient on debut authors and tend to round up.

For me, the easiest one to decide round up or down is for 2.5 stars, because for anything you rate 3 Stars and above Goodreads makes suggested reads based on that.

message 20: by Lyddz (new)

Lyddz Honestly depends. If it's something that I really enjoyed but I know was not the best book in the world, then I round up for enjoyment. If it's something I really hated but it was well-written etc., then I typically round down.

However, if it's a 4.5 rating - I round down to a 4.

message 21: by Nicko Mocanu (new)

Nicko Mocanu (Elril Moonweaver) There is no "None of the above" option. I use my own rating system.
