inkyun I really hope Japanese lit wins.

Marcos Kopschitz Well, like I said, I'd like to explore literatures out of the main ones, that including Russian and French, but let's see what most people prefer.

I voted for Dutch, but Dutch and German, although with a lot of supporters, stand no chances anymore.

So, I'll change my vote to Japanese literature. :-)

message 3: by Ella (new)

Ella I'm new, but on my TBR shelf sit a fair number of "everyone's read this" books from what we in the US call "the Middle East"/ SE Asia. Mohsin Hamid wrote a great book last year that I finally caught up on, but I'd love to read some of his other work, like The Reluctant Fundamentalist or actually any of his. Not for this particular poll, but something to think about in the future. I've been meaning to get to these books since I read an article about the great fiction coming out of Pakistan years ago. Of course, I have a whole bunch from all of the above countries as well yet to read.

Nell I am interested in reading literature by South American, African and Caribbean authors as well as Middle East / SE Asia. None of those choices appear on this poll.

Hi Nell and Ella - similar to monthly book selections, we had a nomination thred where group members nominated and seconded International Literatures (see link here if you're interested).
The five choices above were selected because they were the most popular International Literature categories in that discussion.
I love the idea of reading books outside of the typical American/English works, so pending how it goes this first round, I hope that we explore International Literature many more times as a group. Next time we discuss nominations, would love your input!!
Thanks,
Kasey

Marcos Kopschitz Very tight results so far! :-)

Please note, everybody, that this voting does not end today, it goes on for two more days (ends Jan 10).

MissLemon Will this be the theme for April or a later month? I'm doing an around the world challenge and want to get to the 'right' country in time!

I'm doing an around the world challenge in a different group and have just been reading South American literature, I've read some very good books that I wouldn't have known about otherwise and have added several more to my TBR list to get back to later. I particularly enjoyed Kiss of the Spider Woman I'm 'in' the South Pacific at the moment as I'm travelling 'anti clockwise'.

Carolyn, Kasey, our moderator, will schedule it, probably in the next few days, after the voting ends tomorrow.

Hi Carolyn - we will be doing the National Literature theme in May!

message 11: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz That's it! :-)

Remember, after choosing one literature, we're going to nominate books, then vote for choosing the books to read.

Thanks Kasey ( and Marcos) Half the fun is in the planning!

message 13: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz Wow! Japanese won by one vote! And in the last days it was always a difference of one vote or a little more, the three forerunners chaging places many times.

Well done, everybody!

message 14: by Martina (new)

Martina Bučková yeeees, I changed my initial vote from Dutch to Japanese :D and they won. I look forward to read something new :)

And the winner is Japanese Literature! Thank you, voters. We will be reading Japanese Literature in May.

message 16: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz I really meant everybody, because French was only three votes behind.

And as a matter of fact, this result is really a tie of three (statistically speaking).

Also, having over 70 members who want to read Dutch literature and over a hundred for German, both would practically make a group each! :-)

More important, I think the experience was very successful, and we should repeat it frequently!

message 17: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Peterson Looks like Japanese and Russian Literature tied :-P

It was 230 to 229... unfortunately if users delete their goodreads accounts their votes are removed from polls. I think that's what happened here...

message 19: by Brandi (new)

Brandi I may be missing where this was discussed, but will the book be in the language, or are we just to read a book by a Japanese author?

Please don't judge my completely airhead question. ;)

message 20: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz Hi, Brandi!
Sorry no one answered you so far, but people don't usually get back to polls after they are closed.

By in the language you mean reading in Japanese?! If it is so, don't worry, that would be impossible for most of us out of Japan. We'll read Japanese Literature (for example, Haruki Murakami, Kenzaburo Oe, etc.), but some will read in English translations, like you, I'll read in a Portuguese translation, etc.
