In english, my reading speed is near 160 wpm. Not too bad I think but I understand why 400p books seem very long :D

Pour les francophones, ce test est sympa (avec compréhension en bonus): Test in french.
240 wpm with 100% in comprehension :)

Sophie This test is a fantastic idea, I always wondered what the difference between my reading speed in French and English was. Now I know : 221 wpm in English and 372 wpm in French!

message 3: by Amy (new)

Amy 241 wpm

Aline I've always wondered how my reading speed between German and English is different too.
In English I read 222 wpm and in German about 380 wpm.

Here's a test I found for German, it doesn't calculate it exactly, but I couldn't find another one.

message 5: by Erica (new)

Erica Cool! 366 wpm. Not bad :)

message 6: by Cait (new)

Cait That's really cool. I measured 582 wpm and of the books it gave me the results for I've read Frankenstein (it said within 3 days, which is what it took me), Emma (which took 5, also what it predicted) and Pride and Prejudice (which it predicted 4 days for, but took me 7 because I was away on holiday at the time).

I like how accurate it is. :-)

message 7: by Bec (new)

Bec I got 420 words per minute and it told me I could finish Pride and Prejudice in 7 days - I feel like I've been reading it for AGES - and I'm not even at 50% yet - can't seem to get into it.

message 8: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios I got 230... but I voted "under 200", because in practice I have realized how slow I am as a reader :( I thought I could do it better in Spanish, but I did some tests and got the same! :(

.•*¨`*•✿ ✿•*¨`*•. Christine .•*¨`*•✿ ✿•*¨`*• I got 444 wpm, but I know some books I read faster and some slower.

I did the test and read the passages for Sherlock Holmes (395 wpm), Huck Finn (423 wpm) and Alice in Wonderland (490 wpm) for an average of approximately 436 wpm.

Katie I read all ten excerpts, beginning with Alice in Wonderland. I read 345 wpm. I continued reading with results ranging from 306 wpm (Dracula) to 376 wpm (Pride and and Prejudice), only to end with an average of 345 wpm; which is what I started out with after the the first excerpt. Thought that was interesting. Although, I read Alice in Wonderland a second time and read 423 wpm. So, I think for me it the result rests upon the author's style of writing, how many times I have read the book, and whether I was interested or not in the book.

Yes, between books, you read more or less faster, but usually near the same range. And when it's not a fiction, you usually read more slowly.

For the "slow" readers, you probably do like me: saying the words in your head. The fast readers read only with their eyes, not with the "speaking part" of their brain.

Nice to see that people reading in 2 languages succeed to have good scores :)

message 13: by Ariane (new)

Ariane This is a great test!
I got 232 wpm in English and 368 wpm in French, with a 100% in comprehension.
Not bad :)

message 14: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa I was a slow reader at 187 wpm but like you Zaz, I say the words in my head & feel like I have to read every word. Also, I had my kids running round me while I was reading.

message 15: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Bartlett Yeah, I read the Alice in Wonderland excerpt at 546 wpm, but that's when I was consciously forcing myself to not read the words aloud in my head, which I have a tendency to do by nature and I know that slows me down a lot. As does my short attention span ;)

I did a test in both English and Danish and the result was just about the same. I don't know if the Danish text being a non-fiction text written in columns in a two page pdf-fil makes a different (it seemed a bit diffult to read) but I read about 220 wpm.
I'm impressed that some of you can read more than 350-400 words per minute... That's fast!

message 17: by Daisie (new)

Daisie I got 410 wpm. I thought it would have been slower. I feel that on a device I read much slower than with a real book.

message 18: by Carol (new)

Carol I read at a whopping 585 words per minute! Knew I was a fast reader, but didn't realise how fast.

message 19: by Katie (new)

Katie Has anyone ever taken a speed reading course?

message 20: by Jennifer (last edited May 15, 2015 06:48AM) (new)

Jennifer Barstad The site isn't working for me, :(

Found another site and I got 196 wpm, with 78% comprehension.

Brittany (booksandbottles) I took this test along with a couple of others from different websites and noticed that my speed changes with the type of material i am reading.

message 22: by Emily (new)

Emily I got 270 with Jane Eyre. I think I'm a little slower with classic literature and nonfiction and my pace picks up a bit with modern fiction, but I know I don't read above 400 wpm at any point.

The predictions it gave were pretty accurate on how long it took me to finish those books that I've read. (Although Great Expectations actually took me something like four months to read, because I kept putting it down and picking up other things - I do hate Dickens. Sorry, but I do. But the actual time spent reading that particular book probably averaged out to what they predicted.)

message 23: by Labeba (new)

Labeba Salameh Arabic is my mother language i think i am so fast i couldn't read something with friends or my husband it is so boring waiting them to turn the page, but of course I read in English too I have 188 in speed test I will tray to practice more
