Nostromo Great Expectations is Dicken's best!

message 2: by Wealhtheow (new)

Wealhtheow I almost chose A Tale of Two Cities based entirely on the hotness that is Sydney Carton, but in the end Bleak House is so excellent from beginning to end that it won my heart (and my vote).

message 3: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Little Dorrit should be added to the list.

message 4: by Phillip (new)

Phillip what about dombey and sons?

message 5: by Mary (new)

Mary Choate I recently read A Tale of Two Cities again and literally (pun) got chills when Madam DeFarge was introduced. What a beautiful story!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I voted for Bleak House, but if Dombey and Son had been on there it would have been a tough choice for me.

I agree that Little Dorrit should be added. I wouldn't have voted it #1, but it would be in my top 5 easily. And let us not look over also Dicken's detour into historical fiction with his least appreciated (but nonetheless excellent) tome, Barnaby Rudge.

Laura Verret I liked Little Dorrit and David Copperfield the best. They are both more uplifting than most of Dickens's novels.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I second Dombey & Son.

message 10: by Lawrence (last edited May 30, 2010 06:25PM) (new)

Lawrence It's true, you have to add Dombey & Son. It doesn't seem to get much exposure, but is really good. I picked David Copperfield because I was more involved in David's development than in Pip's in Great Expectations which is almost a tie. GE is a much more modern book of character development than DC, but I just loved D as a person more. Oh, well.
