Mahoghani 23 I have no interest in reading either of these books based on the synopses. I can't fathom reading and trying to understand the horrors that exist in today's society. I will be skipping this month's book reading.

Ok. No problem. See you in July.

Mahoghani 23 I will still come in and "listen" in on the reviews.

Understood
Now I understand why you nominated the book you did as you had be scratching my head on how that book fitted with the theme for the month.

I had read the book you nominated and was wondering how it scared you/fitted into the horror category.

What else are you reading?

When I was at a book conference recently - there was a book that "buzzing" about Virgin: A Novel by Radhika Sanghani. The consensus was it was funny, realistic and has broad appeal. I hope to get a chance to read one lazy summer day.

Beverly, I didn't know there was a theme and I apologize for not knowing. I like mysteries, funny books, romance, some drama but I have a hard time reading about slavery, child molestation, rape and segregation. It bothers me and it may take me a year to finish the book. I read The Book of Night Women and it took me a year to finish the book.

I'm like you; I love audiobooks. I just finished, Message from a Mistress

I'm also reading Walter Mosley's A Red Death (audio) and a few others like Kinfolks

Where was the theme posted?

I put the theme in my initial post in the what would you like to read in June discussion area. I will see if there is somewhere else I can put it so that it can stand out more.

Wow - you are reading The Book of Night Women. Yes, that was a very painful book to read one of the most painful portrayals of the slave experience I have ever read. I had to make sure that was not the last thing that I read before going to sleep.

I hope it does not stress you out too much.

I am definitely not a writer and have no interest in writing a book. In fact English was the subject that I did not like in school. Lucky for me my mother was an English major and proofed my papers for me all through school. :)

But I have always been a reader. In fact I learned a new old-fashioned work the other day - Book-Bosomed which describes some who carries a book at all times. Thank goodness for ereaders these days.

But I am an avid reader and also a reviewer for several organizations.
I am always interested in what is coming out next - especially when it comes to authors of color. So a lot of times I will nominate a recently released book as I want to make sure that current books get read.

And there are all types of book conferences which are open to readers.

In May I spent two weeks in New Orleans as there were two book conferences back-to-back. The first was Romance Slam Jam which is a reader/author conference for black romance (all genres), women's fiction and some mystery/thrillers. I have been going to this conference for the past 8 years and it feels like a family reunion. This conference has about 200 people.

The second conference was RT (Romantic Times) Booklovers Conference and it had over 3000 attendees so there is a different feel to this conference.

So for two weeks it was book junkie bliss (and was so busy talking/learning books that I did not read a book during the conferences).

Since I believe as a friend says - Every book is not for everybody but every book is for someone - I ask questions on what folks are reading to get a feel for what this group is about.

While my reading tastes are all over the board and changes as I over indulge in one genre and put it away for a while.

But I tend to prefer literary fiction, historical fiction, speculative fiction, mysteries and romance.

I tend to shy away from YA and New Adult.

Are you planning to attend any more conferences this year?

While there are several interesting book conference/events coming for the next of the year - I will not be attending any of them - summer is track season for my family, I also like to travel in the fall/winter - so have a couple of foreign trips planned.

I already read it. It took me a year from when I started it.....it was interesting, a cause for anger and wonder how people could view another group of people that way.

I like these groups as well. There is so much to learn. I probably need to see what book conferences come through my area. I was in a group before where we spent six months reading the classics. That was a little too lorn for me. I did enjoy some books but others were a little dry.

I love mysteries, romance (sometimes) and anything that catches my eye. I've been listening to a lot of audiobooks and enjoy my time in the car than listening to the radio.
