I am convinced that at bottom it was no mere accident that the Christian message, in the period when it was taking shape, first entered the Greek world and there merged with the inquiry into understanding, into truth.16 Believing and understanding belong together no less than believing and “standing”, simply because standing and understanding are inseparable.
