The British government was determined to have matters out with the Americans. “The die is now cast,” George III declared. “The colonies must either submit or triumph.” Shortly thereafter the monarch made his point more forcefully: “The New England governments are in a state of rebellion. Blows must decide whether they are to be subject to this country or independent.”
