The same mental plasticity that allowed them to adjust to new places and social groups, develop coping strategies for new situations and eventually treat them as normal, also let them do the same thing for climate change, encroaching police states, and despair.
The book is peppered with philosophical bits throughout, which I enjoyed. This line is a pretty despairing criticism of humanity and I definitely feel this at times. I try to lean on that the former will get us through as ya gotta have some semblance of hope to get on with life.
