Interestingly enough, if Schaffer had taken things more slowly, he may have been able to establish an independent trading relationship with Kaumualii that would have complemented what Baranov was already doing with Kamehameha. That might have resulted in a Russian presence in the Hawaiian Islands that would have greatly strengthened a trading triangle between the islands, Sitka, and the California coast, and put Russian America more at the center of the Cantonese trade.
