Once again, hundreds of millions of dollars in military spending began to pour into the territory. Construction was under way on Eielson Air Force Base southeast of Fairbanks. Named after aviation pioneer Carl Ben Eielson and built to handle long-range bombers, it was then the largest airfield in the world.
