All my life, I had wanted to find a reason. I wanted to be able to trace Papa’s reactivity and manipulative behavior to some specific brutalizing trauma or maybe point to some inherent brain chemistry, or a set of social norms, hoping that with such an explanation, everything else would suddenly make sense.
