People don’t always let us become who we are. They try to keep us in the box of who we were.
The air between us thickens. Two people who’ve been hurt one too many times finally acknowledging out loud that those hurts affected them.
it possible to be nostalgic for something you never experienced?
“Yes.” She grins. “It’s on the internet so it must be true.”
Shame has a unique ability to make even the simplest eye contact uncomfortable.
“Not me, my man. You know I just do whatever my wife tells me to do.”
Some things are true, regardless of who you are. Saying something kind and from the heart is never a bad idea, and it’s never the wrong thing to do.’”
“Why are you trying to fight the whole world?”
“The only way I know for something like that to lose its power is to shine a light on it. To speak it out loud. To call it what it is, and to own it. That way, it can’t torture you anymore.”
No blanket sharing! Feet on the floor! Lights on at all times! I’m disobeying all of these rules, which meant by morning I’ll be married.
“Oh good Lord, you’ve got it bad. First time in love or what? Get out of here with that look.”
“Everyone gets hurt,” she says. “Until they heal. And then it’s time to try again.” She stands, picks up her bag and the dress she carried in on a hanger. “Otherwise, we’d all end up sad and alone.”
“I’m scared of what tomorrow is going to feel like if you’re not there. I’m scared of going another day without telling you how I really feel.”
