It is true that China also had what might be termed colonies – newly acquired territories achieved by a process of westward imperial expansion from 1644 until the late eighteenth century – but these were in the interior of the Eurasian continent, bereft of either large arable lands or dense populations, and were unable to provide raw materials on anything like the scale of the New World.
