“Good, then at least no one will miss him when he’s dead.”
My eyes widen at the small cactus I bought him two years ago as a Christmas gift. “Oh my God. It’s still alive?” I reach out and grab the tiny don’t be a prick pot. “I can manage to take care of a cactus.” I startle at the sound of his voice. “But it’s been two years!” And he keeps it on his nightstand.
Like you opening the door in a towel, knowing she was on the other side?
“Get my wife whatever she wants.”
Except maybe me.
don’t think as I grab his balled-up fist and lace our fingers together. “She had good taste.” A noise gets trapped in his throat before he places his other hand on top of mine, securing it to his thigh. My body vibrates like I touched a live wire.
He wants to spend time with you.
“Don’t do that.” My brows tug together. “Do what?” “Downplay your experience because someone else had it harder than you.”
“I was in a rush.” He bolted from the shower for me?
“I thought it would be like the movies.” She flinches as she checks out the damage.
“Calm down, Muhammad Ali. I wouldn’t count today as a victory by any means.” The doctor’s eyes lighten. “Next time, avoid any initial contact on the fourth and fifth knuckles.” “Please don’t encourage her.”
You care about her.
I text my knight in shining Armani.
“Because I wasn’t about to give you one more reason to hate the world.”
“Our name.”
“Yuánfèn.”
A predestined infinity.
He robs me of my reply as his lips slam against mine.
“If you say nice, I swear I’ll make your death look like an accident.” “Devastating.”
There are plenty of things I might miss, like you struggling with a printer or harassing an innocent employee because they forgot to use Arial font in an email. I mean, come on, what did Times New Roman ever do to you?”
I smack her ass for that comment.
My next sentence comes out ragged. “What are you doing?” “Helping my wife.” My throat bobs. “You’re growing a bit too comfortable with that nickname for my liking.” “I use it to remind you of your place.” “And what’s that?” “Mine.”
“You don’t get to judge my choices.” “I only want to understand them.”
“You don’t need to try too hard. I am your wife after all.” “Even if you weren’t, I won’t give you up.”
“Don’t go telling anyone else or they’ll be disappointed to find out it’s only for you.”
He reaches out and runs his thumb across my bottom lip. “Hopefully they inherit their mother’s selflessness instead.”
“Stop fighting and give me ten minutes.” “You don’t deserve ten seconds, let alone ten minutes of my time.” “How about ten words then?” I laugh. “I’d like to see you try.” “I am falling in love with you, Iris Elizabeth Kane.”
“Ask me why I hate when people use Times New Roman instead of Arial.” “Are you serious right now? What does that have to do with any of this?” “Because I chose it for you.” “I’m sorry, what?” “I read somewhere online that sans serif fonts are easier for people with dyslexia to read, so I changed my requirements. Forced everyone else I oversee to switch with me or else they would face my wrath. All because I wanted to help you.”
“Want to know why I kept the cactus?” I nod. “Because it was the first time someone got me a present that made me laugh.”
“Ask me why you were denied the job transfer.” No. There’s absolutely no freaking way. “Tell me you didn’t.” His lips press into a thin white line. “I couldn’t let you go.” “I
