God wasn’t here, but the Devil was.
“Are you the Devil?” He leaned in. Close, so close oak and rain and gunmetal washed over me, slathered across my lips. “For you, I’ll be so much fucking worse.”
“Yn y bywyd hwn neu o hyn ymlaen. In this life and hereafter.”
“Your god’s not here, sweetheart. You can pray to me.”
His head tilted to the side, golden eyes scouring me. “You are mine.”
“Just like that,” he whispered. I moved forward. He growled low. “Just like that, darling. Crawl to me.”
“Anything she wants.”
“If something happens to me, I swear I will haunt you for the rest of my days, Jack Warren.” He released a low sigh. “You already do.”
I was myself when I danced. I could speak and be heard in the silence of my feet moving beneath me. I’d long outgrown my pointe slippers, but I danced like I used to anyway.
“Good girls are boring. I’d rather be a whore.”
I was completely alone and trapped in the lair of a fire-breathing dinosaur, but I’d endured dinner parties with Fairville’s church group, so I could survive this.
