When did I say that? I’m a romance reader. I have a thing for assholes.
“Yeah, that’s not me. I’m just like every other chick. As basic as they come. I had an Uggs phase. I had a skinny jeans phase. I like my books with romance, my coffee with more creamer than caffeine, and I even take aesthetic pictures of my food anytime I’m at a restaurant.”
When they deep dive into my life they’ll find out I go to trivia, I cross-stitch in my free time, and I read dirty books. No one cares about me. I’m not you, Ryan. It’s you they worship. So, please, let me go be a social butterfly because I’m starved for attention.” Her eager brown eyes lighten with humor. “You cross-stitch?” “Proudly.” “You grandma.” She smiles at that, matching the now relaxed grin on my lips. “Are you sure?”
You’re not going to cater to anyone’s toxic masculinity bullshit. You’re not going to be quiet and appeasing when you’re with me. If Ron, or anyone else for that matter, has an issue with you being smarter than him, then we’re going to have a far bigger problem than him thinking I’m not a good leader.”
“Yes, please. I want nothing more than to share a room with you while you’re wearing fucking footy pajamas.”
“You can’t stop being who you are because someone else thinks it’s too much, Ind. He can go find less.”
“Do you think I’m a trainwreck, Ryan?” I huff a laugh. “You’re more like a cute little fender bender.”
“Indy, to make this clear, I don’t want a single daily update tomorrow!” Stevie announces from the couch. “I’ll text you in the morning with details!” “I’m getting a new number.” “Aren’t we the cutest family foursome you’ve ever seen?” Zanders pitches in. “Love you all,” Ryan finishes from the doorway, pulling me behind him. “Rosie most of all, of course.”
“You know that jersey you’ve got with my last name on it? When you see it hanging there in your closet, let it serve as a reminder to you, that soon enough, it’ll be her last name too.”
Holding my fist out, I connect it with Zanders’. Leaning down, I pop a kiss on Stevie’s cheek. “Love you,” she says. “Love you, Vee.” Next to my sister sits her best friend, the brown-eyed beauty who owns my entire heart. With my knuckle, I tilt her chin up and lean down to kiss her lips. “And I love you.” She smiles into me. “Go give them hell, Five.” Jogging back to my team, Zanders shouts from behind me. “What about me? You don’t love me?” “Love you too, brother!”
“Hey!” Indy jumps from her seat, yelling at the referees as I jog past her. “What the hell was that? Are you blind? That’s an and-one! Why don’t you start blowing that whistle instead of blowing this game?”
“He’s an MVP nod, for fuck’s sake! Give the man some credit! What the hell are they paying you for?” she continues before adding a few more colorful curse words. “Goddamn. Are your knees sore from blowing that call?”
“Would you like to come with me so you can confront Michael while I pick up a new embroidery hoop and needles?” He drops his book to the couch, slipping his arms around my waist. “I was about to body slam Michael through the floor.”
“This is practically a how-to manual on how to please a woman. How are more men not reading these?”
