I’m not easily distracted, but if I could manifest my perfect distraction, it’d look a lot like her.
“Ever hear the phrase ‘she’s not like other girls’?” He gives a small nod of his head. “Yeah, that’s not me. I’m just like every other chick. As basic as they come. I had an Uggs phase. I had a skinny jeans phase. I like my books with romance, my coffee with more creamer than caffeine, and I even take aesthetic pictures of my food anytime I’m at a restaurant.”
“Heads-up, Shay, I’m an expensive girlfriend. Fake or not. I can’t help it.” “Then I guess it’s a good thing I’ve got money.”
“No. That’s not how this is going to go. When you’re with me, I want you exactly as you are. That includes letting people know just how fucking smart you are. You’re not going to cater to anyone’s toxic masculinity bullshit. You’re not going to be quiet and appeasing when you’re with me. If Ron, or anyone else for that matter, has an issue with you being smarter than him, then we’re going to have a far bigger problem than him thinking I’m not a good leader.”
“I want to be able to speak to your dad without you having to translate. That way I can let him know when his daughter is being a pain in my ass.”
“Ryan, my guy, you’re so completely fucked, and you can’t even see it.”
“Ryan Shay, do you care about me?” “No.” “You care about me.” “No, I don’t, but I’d rather you not get kidnapped while I’m playing a fucking basketball game.” She moves her shoulders, dancing around the island. “Ryan Shay cares about me!” “You’re annoying.”
“Do you think I’m a trainwreck, Ryan?” I huff a laugh. “You’re more like a cute little fender bender.”
Call me old-fashioned, I don’t care, but I have yet and will not let her open her own door.
“You’re chaotic as fuck, Blue, but you bring me more peace than anyone else.”
“Do you think I’m pretty?” He rolls his eyes. “Do you?” Ryan levels me with a look, serious and stoic. “I think you’re smart.”
“Hey, Blue, I kind of missed talking to you for three days. Let’s not do that again.” “Deal.” “Add it to the fridge. With all the other deals we’ve made.”
Call me a dreamer. Call me naive, I don’t care. I call myself optimistic.”
“Why are you doing this?” “Because I like taking care of people. You, especially.” He
“Look at that love-sick motherfucker. Now he has an absolute smoke show living in his house. I want an Indy walking around my house.” “Watch it,” I bite out. “The girl’s got her MBA and she’s funny as hell.”
“There’s the runaway.” “Hi.” Eyes soften. “Hi, Blue.” Zanders squeals from the couch like a teenager. “I was giving you some space,” I explain before I’m asked. “Why would I want space, and from you of all people?”
“But I spend a lot of your money.” “Someone needs to.” “And I’m messy. You don’t like messy.” “I like your mess.” “And I’m needy. I have no idea how to be alone.” “Good. I don’t want you to be alone. I want you to be with me.”
“I mean this in the nicest way possible, but Blue, you’re the most inconvenient thing that’s ever happened to me.”
Touch her and I’ll kill you. Say something that makes her upset and I’ll ruin your life. Look at her inappropriately and I will beat the living shit out of you.
“Sometimes the quietest love is the loudest,”
“I want you, Indy. I want us. I want our little life we’ve built even when we thought we were pretending. I want you in our house because you’ve made it a home. I want your mess and your chaos. I want your genuine smiles, the ones you wear when you’re around my sister, the hockey team, and me. I want you happy, and I want to be the reason you are. I want you to choose me.”
I know I don’t have your history, but I want your future.”
“I’m sorry someone let you believe you were hard to love, because, Blue, it’s the easiest thing I’ve ever done.”
I will burn the world down to protect her and I’ll proudly wave the match, so everyone knows I’m the one who did it.”
“You know that jersey you’ve got with my last name on it? When you see it hanging there in your closet, let it serve as a reminder to you, that soon enough, it’ll be her last name too.”
“Your girl is kind of scary sometimes, Shay,” Dom notes from one side. Ethan laughs from the other. “I know,” I admit proudly. “And I fucking love it.”
“Sometimes I wish you had a normal job because then maybe you could trust there are no ulterior motives to loving you.”
When you think of me, the only emotion I want you to feel is unconditional, earth-shattering love. Because when I look at you, I see my entire future and I can’t stand to live in a world where you look at me and don’t see the same thing.”
“Why did you pay for my fertility treatments? I didn’t want anyone paying for that.” “No, you didn’t want your parents paying for that. You said you felt uncomfortable for someone else paying for you to start a family. Well, it’s going to be my family too, so I don’t count.”
