“A manager can’t manage what he doesn’t know,” he continued. “So you have to make a point of knowing not just the status of the work but also the status of your people. Many managers focus too much on their projects and not enough on their people. They do what you did when we walked the flock this morning. They’re there with their flock—but not really. They’re preoccupied with the work and not with the workers.”
an old adage, but it’s true: people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
“People long to follow a leader who is a person of integrity, authenticity, and compassion. That person will have the loyal following and trust of his people.
“Great leaders leave their mark by constantly communicating their values and sense of mission. They tirelessly call their people to engage in the cause. They know people are easily distracted by the many pulls of life, so they’re continually calling them back to the mission, back to their purpose for being.
Remember that great leadership isn’t just professional; it’s personal.
“Establishing boundaries isn’t a matter of ego; it’s a matter of practicality and safety. Your department can’t fulfill its mission unless everyone acts together. What’s more, you can’t protect anyone who has strayed beyond the safety of your reach. Boundaries aren’t bad things; they’re good things. Unless, of course, you confuse boundaries with bridles.”
