TORNADOES ARE A PECULIARLY American phenomenon. They can happen anywhere in the world, but 80 percent—roughly 800 to 1,000 a year—occur in the United States. Most occur in the spring, along the stretch of plains extending from Texas to the Dakotas: Tornado Alley.
