Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the death toll from tornadoes mounted. There were no warnings, no time for people to seek shelter. On April 5, 1936, a twister in Mississippi killed 216 people in Tupelo. The next day, the same violent storm system spawned another tornado that killed 203 people in Gainesville, Georgia.
