Thus, for example, to explain and define the meaning of the Eucharist the way a certain theology does it, there is no need for the word “eucharist”; it becomes irrelevant. And yet for the early Fathers it was the key word giving unity and meaning to all the “elements” of the liturgy. The Fathers called “eucharist” the bread and wine of the offering, and their offering and consecration, and finally, communion. All this was Eucharist and all this could be understood only within the Eucharist.
