But when a woman lights the lamp and sees the god in him, he feels called upon to live up to that, to be strong in his masculine consciousness. Naturally he trembles! Yet he requires this feminine acknowledgment of his worth. Terrible things happen to men who are deprived of the presence of women—inner or outer—for usually it is the presence of woman that reminds each man of the best that is in him.
The promise rings true and faithful: if you can bear to see your man for what he truly is then light the lamp which only you can provide. You will find your man to be a god—probably not in the paradise sense which you hoped for, but in the Olympian sense, which is much greater. I know no greater promise in life.
Psyche finally goes to Aphrodite’s altar, for it is almost always the case that whatever has wounded you will also be instrumental in your healing.
