Well, this was the most racist MVP voting year ever. You had Pettit’s bizarre landslide win (six times as many first-place votes as Russell?), half the league ignoring Elgin, the Cooz stealing four of Russell’s first-place votes and four other white players (Arizin, Schayes, Sears and Hagan) unaccountably earning first-place votes. You can’t play the “Pettit was a sentimental choice” card because he’d already won in ’56.
