One of the unintended consequences of these developments was the virtual disappearance of ‘unification’ from the German political agenda. To be sure, re-unification of the divided country remained the Lebenslüge (‘life-lie’) of the Federal Republic, as Brandt put it. But by the mid-Eighties, a few years before it unexpectedly took place, re-unification no longer mobilized mass opinion.
