If one does not do so one is liable to be putting oneself in danger. In such a situation, one’s only choice is to stay clear of trouble, devoting oneself to the pursuit of the highest moral standard in one’s life as a private citizen. Shih Yü was straight as an arrow whether the Way prevailed in the state or not. All Confucius was willing to grant him was that he was straight.
