There remain two major virtues to be dealt with. First, there is hsin. This is a concept which has no exact equivalent in English. To be hsin is to be reliable in word. An important part of this has, of course, to do with promise-keeping. But when Confucius talks of being hsin in word (I.7, XIII.20, XV.6), he means more than that. To be hsin in word applies to all one’s words.
