“I doubt I shall ever marry. But if I should, I’ll not give a man control over me.”
“What you demonstrated was that you are willful. No man wants a willful wife.” “Then no man shall have me, for I’ll not change to please him.”
“I know your only experience”—how to say it without terrifying her more—“with a man was nothing short of brutal, but I assure you that in my bed you’ll find nothing except tenderness. I will be as gentle as a man can possibly be. I will never force you, nor will I rush you. I’ll wait until you’re ready. It will be good between us, Frannie. I swear to you.” He saw tears brimming in her eyes. “Please don’t cry, sweetheart.”
Maybe he isn't an awful person but you can't tell me he won't sleep around while he's waiting for her to be comfortable
To her surprise, in the coach, he didn’t sit opposite her as a gentleman should, but he sat beside her, his arm around her, holding her as close as a dear friend—or dare she think it, as a lover?

“I apologized because I’ve done all in my power to convince her to become my wife, would do anything to have her as my wife, and I suddenly realized that I couldn’t marry her, that I had to marry you.” Her heart stammered. “Why?” Before he could respond, the truth hit her. “Damn them! They told you, didn’t they? I didn’t want this. I didn’t—” “What? Who? What are you talking about?” “Dr. Graves and Winnie. They’ve opposed my plans from the beginning. But it’s not fair to you, just because I’m with child—” “What?” Claybourne wrapped his hand around her arm, drew her near, and stood over her

“I love you. I adore Frannie, but I love you desperately, Catherine. You’re courageous, bold, and you challenge me at every turn. You’re willing to risk everything for those you care about. Your willingness to sacrifice knows no bounds. I am so unworthy, but if you’ll marry me, I’ll see that you never regret it.”
