On March 7, 1942, the ominous phrase “a final solution of the Jewish question” appears in The Goebbels Diaries.20 On March 27, 1942, after describing the deportations lately begun from Poland’s ghettos, Goebbels writes chillingly, “Fortunately, a whole series of possibilities presents itself for us in wartime that would be denied us in peacetime.
