Despite the occasional success of head-on tactical assaults such as the Confederate victories at Gaines’ Mill, Chancellorsville, and Chickamauga or Union triumphs at Missionary Ridge and Cedar Creek, the defense usually prevailed against frontal attacks. Even when an assault succeeded, it did so at high cost in killed and wounded.
