Many civilians on both sides, especially in the South, experienced these sights and smells of war directly as well as through soldiers’ letters. Much of the fighting in May and June 1862 occurred almost on Richmond’s doorstep. Many of the 21,000 wounded Confederates from Seven Pines and the Seven Days’ were brought into the city.
