Humans. Aside from tasting delicious, they were usually more trouble than they were worth.
She’d just finished the third pancake when she noticed Spade watching her. He glanced at her now-empty plate, then at the untouched silverware, and back to her.
“Always enjoy seeing a woman with a healthy appetite,” he said, amusement clear in his tone.
It was the height of stupidity to be tempted by a woman he could neither bite nor shag. Perhaps for his next brilliant notion, he’d take up shaving with a chain saw.
“Just because a lady can, doesn’t mean she should,”
“He’s only being polite. You should look the word up,” Denise settled on.
Ian snorted. “And angels fly out of my arse when I fart. All his chivalrous tendencies aside, I haven’t seen Charles this attentive with a human in almost a hundred and fifty years.”
Why couldn’t people acknowledge that occasionally, life just sucked? Didn’t they realize that sometimes silence was more comforting than the most sincere expression of sympathy or attempt at showing the deeper meaning behind it all?
“You’ve got a delusional sense of optimism, you know that?”
Her eyes widened and then she laughed. “You remembered exactly what I like. God, Spade, I think I love you.”
I’m in love with you. I never thought that would happen to me again—and especially with a human.
Villains of the world, beware! I can eat you under the table AND gross you out with my monster paws!
“Not to worry. The only icebergs here are tiny ones served in glasses.”
It was the sort of bone-deep emotion that made him want to hold her tighter with one hand—and draw a sword against the world with the other.
“Lucifer’s bouncing balls, that’s why you’re acting like a nutter! You’ve gone and fallen in love with her. Bloody hell, if I didn’t see it on your face myself, I wouldn’t believe it.”
Can I get back in the boat without you striking me again? Or should I stay out here enjoying the marine life?” “Why don’t you swim around until you find a shark? Then you can discuss how much the two of you have in common,” Spade shot back.
As if Spade’s chivalry would allow him to do anything to a woman. The harshest punishment she could imagine him dishing out to Cat would be refusing to open a door for her.
“Charles, mate, you fret too much. I’m a grown man, I am, and I can blood my handle.” “Handle your blood?” Bones offered dryly. Ian grinned. “Exactly.”
“Denise,” he said low. “If you can hear me, I very much need to you come back. Don’t resign me to the fate of being one of those crusty old vampires who only live with their pets.”
“You make a right fetching feline, but really, there are limits to the things I’m willing to try.”
“You scruffed me.”
“When you put it like that…you sound like a sicko.”
“Ready?” he asked softly, but also with irony. “Life never waits until you’re ready. I wasn’t ready to turn into a vampire, but I did. I wasn’t ready to lose someone I loved a long time ago, but it happened. You weren’t ready to have your husband murdered, but he was. You certainly weren’t ready for a demon to brand you, but he did. And neither of us might be ready for what we feel for each other, but that doesn’t make those feelings go away.”
“You’ll always love him,” he said, as if he’d read her mind. “That doesn’t die just because he did, or because you now love me. Your love for him is part of who you are. It’s a beautiful part, Denise. Don’t be sad of it, and
I will never be jealous of it.”
