“I don’t know what things were like around here before me, but on my team, we respect women.”
I still don’t, really, just that her name is Beckett, she’s drop-dead gorgeous, and she kisses like the world is burning down around her.
Being alone with the guy to tutor him? That sounds like heaven… I mean, torture.
He has a smile on his face, but there’s something else in his eyes. A challenge. I’m suddenly aware of one very important fact: he’s an athlete. And athletes don’t quit.
“Every missed turn is a shot,” Coop murmurs. “We’re going to be wiping him off the floor at the end of the night.”
He laughs. “Why would I be afraid? Let him try. I can take him, baby.”
“But he needs to believe it, and if I was really dating you, I would defend you every time someone so much as looked at you the wrong way.”
If I had to pretend to date anyone, I’d choose her a hundred times over. Kissing her again, finally, set my skin on fire.
“Good girl,” he praises as he snaps his hips forward. His hand finds my clit again, rubbing in time with his thrusts. “What a good fucking girl.”
If I could only pick one person to be around, one person to know, one person to love, for the rest of my life—I’d choose her.
“One day I will tell our kids that,” I whisper. My heartbeat quickens at the thought. “Because I’m yours, forever.”
The moment we locked eyes at that party, he saw the cracks in my armor, and he hasn’t stopped prying it away since.
“Because he scared my girlfriend. He forced himself on her. And as much as I love football, I love her more.”
“I’m going to marry Bex one day,” I say. “This is my present, but she’s my future. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her. Maybe it’s wrong, but I’m going to defend her. I couldn’t just give the ball to him.”
“You’re not in control of his actions. He chose to kiss you without your say-so. He chose to punch James. He chose to do all of this, Bex! Let him deal with the consequences!”
“James is going to put the people he loves before anything else whether you want him to or not, Bex. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be balance, I guess, but you shouldn’t feel bad about what he did. He did it because he loves you, and I think he’d do it again.
“I never said it was easy. Just that you can do it.”
“Maybe neither of us are special, but that’s not the point. The point is you’re the best person I’ve ever met, and I wish more than anything that that’s how you saw yourself too.”
